2013 Ram 1500You'll be forgiven for thinking the 2013 Ram 1500 looks vaguely familiar. In fact, the sheetmetal is all the same and surface changes are minor. However, most of what lies beneath and bookends that sheetmetal is new or revised for 2013.
The Ram 1500, considered a half-ton, can carry loads of stuff and can tow trailers similar to what the competition will. Maximum load and tow ratings among the major manufacturers change faster than mobile device operating systems and the only certainty is you want to consider a bigger pickup if you will frequently operate near those maximums.
The 2013 Ram 1500 offers three cabs, three bed lengths (two with RamBox), three engines, two transmissions, two suspension arrangements, and interiors from hose-out ethic to limo substitute.
The biggest news for 2013 is the smallest engine, a 3.6-liter four-cam V6 delivering 305 horsepower, which is 90 more than the 3.7-liter used on 2012 models, with 13 percent more torque and 20 percent better fuel economy. At introduction, the 2013 Ram gets bragging rights for best fuel economy. The engine is new only to Ram, already used in Chrysler Group's Jeeps, vans and cars. Ram HFE is aimed at high fuel economy: Ram HFE gets an EPA-rated 18/25 mpg City/Highway with V6 and 8-speed automatic.
Also significant news for 2013, and a first in pickups, is an 8-speed automatic transmission from German manufacturer ZF. It is standard with the V6 and will be available on the 5.7-liter V8 by calendar year 2013. Both the 310-hp 4.7-liter and 395-hp 5.7-liter V8s come with what's called a 6-speed automatic, though we maintain it compares to a 5-speed (see Driving Impressions).
The last major change is the addition of full air suspension, which offers automatic leveling, eases entry/exit, and offers variable ride height for off-highway travel. The air suspension is available on any model except the new Ram HFE fuel economy special, which includes automatic start/stop engine operation and a bed cover.
Other changes for 2013 include electric-assist steering, more sophisticated electrical systems, active grille shutters, projector and LED lights on higher-line versions, revised cabin materials and dashboards, a lighter frame and box supports, more aluminum suspension components, central locking system that includes tailgate and RamBox compartments, low rolling resistance tires (for fuel economy), keyless entry/start, power sliding defrostable rear window, power folding mirrors and rain-sensing wipers.
On the outside, Ram continues with imposing stature. Like many Dodge cars, the Ram's front end has a forward tilt, but it remains very aerodynamic. Detailing for 2013 lowered the coefficient of drag (one aspect of total aero resistance) from 0.386 to 0.360.
The Ram is a conventional full-size pickup truck, but it differs in rear suspension and powertrains from all its competitors: primarily Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra twins, and to a lesser extent the Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra. Because the Honda Ridgeline does not have a separate frame, cab and bed, nor a choice of two or four-wheel drive, we do not consider it a conventional half-ton pickup, although those buying a crew cab pickup primarily as a second car would be wise to consider it.
Underneath, where for decades pickup trucks have had a live axle in back with leaf springs, the Ram's rear axle is suspended by coil springs and it is located by four trailing links and a lateral Panhard bar. An optional four-corner air suspension is unique to the Ram, as is the RamBox bed arrangement. Basic front suspension design and brake systems parallel other half-ton pickups; only the F-150 also uses electric-assist power steering.
Inside, the Ram offers seating for three to six people, in-floor storage on Crew Cabs and environments that span working-grade vinyl and rubber to French stitched leather with ventilated and heated seats. Though it varies by region there are 10 Ram 1500 nameplates.
Brand loyalty in pickup trucks makes some sports rivalries look like civilized debate, and many will recommend only one despite the fact that there are no bad pickups. Shopping is made more difficult by so-called competitive comparisons we've seen online that imply drum brakes are better than disc brakes (we disagree) or 300 horsepower is superior to 400 pound-feet of torque (ditto). Add to that payload and tow ratings that change frequently. To choose the best truck for you, we recommend avoiding any buying decision made purely on brand or maximum cargo or tow rating.
With so many versions there is no shortage of Rams to choose from. Compared to the competition, the Ram's suspensions are unique and the styling is less conservative. GM and Ford half-tons offer more engine choices but none has an 8-speed automatic. The Nissan Titan is the only half-ton that offers a full eight-foot long bed on their Crew Cab model.
(Note Ram is now a standalone brand at Chrysler, though the government mandated vehicle ID number still names Dodge as the manufacturer.)
Model Lineup 2013 Ram 1500
The 2013 Ram comes in Tradesman, Express, HFE, SLT, Big Horn, LoneStar, Outdoorsman, Sport, Laramie and Laramie Longhorn trim levels. Some of these, such as Big Horn and Lone Star, are primarily cosmetic and packaging and available only in certain regions. Cab choices include a Regular Cab with short (6.3 feet) or long (8 feet) bed, four-door Quad Cab with short bed (6.3 feet), and the Crew Cab with a short bed (5.6 feet) or long bed (6.3 feet). Note Ram terminology can be confusing: Some "long" and "short" beds are the same length, depending on cab, so shop by tape measure, not Ram's labels. There is no Tradesman 1500 HD for 2013. (Ram Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 pickups are covered in a separate review.)
Ram Tradesman, SLT, and Outdoorsman are available in all body styles; all others are restricted to certain cabs and/or bed lengths.
The 4.7-liter V8 and 6-speed automatic are standard on Tradesman and optional on SLT. The V6 and 8-speed automatic are standard on HFE and SLT models, optional on Tradesman. The 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and 6-speed automatic are optional on Tradesman and SLT, and standard on everything else. Air suspension is available on all four-door Rams. No manual transmissions are offered.
Ram Tradesman models are workhorses with standard vinyl floor, manual windows and gray vinyl 40/20/40 bench seat. However, they do include air conditioning, stability/trailer sway control, tilt wheel, cruise control, trailer hitch, variable intermittent wipers, locking lift-assist tailgate, spray-in bedliner, trailer plugs, 6-speaker AM/FM stereo and USB port, power windows and door locks on four-doors, and under-floor storage (Crew Cab). Options include chrome wheels and trim, fog lamps, bed cover, Uconnect 5.0 with Bluetooth, CD player, backup camera, sliding rear window, power and trailer mirrors, carpeting, cloth seats, block heater, 32-gallon fuel tank and air suspension. Ram Express models, available in all cab styles, add visual cues to a Tradesman with 20-inch wheels, body-color trim, dual rear exhaust and fog lamps; interiors get carpeting and floor mats; trailer hitch is optional.
Ram SLT adds to Tradesman with the V6 and 8-speed automatic, cloth seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, power sliding rear window, Sirius XM, cruise control, overhead console and remote keyless entry.
Ram HFE is regular cab short box 2WD only; it includes most of the SLT-grade equipment plus a bed cover and start/stop; it's the only Ram that does not offer 20-inch wheels.
Ram Big Horn and Ram Lone Star specials come on four-door cabs only and include a Hemi, 20-inch wheels, bright grillework, fog lamps, leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant controls, a Class IV receiver hitch and unique badging.
Ram Outdoorsman is offered in all cab styles and includes body-color grille, painted bumpers and fender flares, tow hooks, trailer hitch, skid plates, 32-gallon fuel tank, power heated auto-dimming outside mirrors, cloth bucket seats, power driver seat, 60/40 split-fold rear seat, 115-VAC outlet, HomeLink, heavy rubber floormats, 3.92:1 axle ratio on 4WD, and truck-duty LT265/70R17E tires.
Ram Sport is available in Quad and Crew Cabs. Sport includes the 5.7-liter Hemi, slate-gray contrast-stitched bucket seats, body-color bumpers, fog lamps, on-demand 4WD and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. The Sport R/T Regular Cab 2WD short bed gets a 4.10:1 rear axle and 285/45R22 tires on polished aluminum wheels but will still tow 5050 pounds. Ram Laramie is four-door only comes with leather heated 40/20/40 front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, driver memory system with power front seats and outside mirrors, rear park assist, heated steering wheel, woodgrain trim, power-adjustable pedals, surround sound, UConnect, accent fender flares, and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels (17s are available).
Ram Laramie Longhorn comes in Crew Cab only and is the top of the line, adding to a Laramie with French-stitched leather upholstery, leather on the dash and door panels, real wood trim, Berber floor mats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, leather-wrapped shift knob, navigation with SiriusXM Travel Link, rear camera, accent-painted running boards and bumpers, 32-gallon fuel tank and spray-in bed liner.
Options vary by trim but there are plenty of choices. Among the 1500 line: 8 exterior mirrors, 11 wheels, 10 seats, and four audio systems.
Where not standard, a spray-in bedliner, trailer hitch, trailer brake control, side steps, power trailer towing mirrors, smoker's package, limited-slip differential, sliding rear window, CD player and engine block heater are available on any Ram; a moonroof is offered for any four-door.
Safety features include dual front multi-stage, side impact and side curtain airbags, three-point belts in all seating positions with constant-force retractors, LATCH child-seat anchors, child-protection rear door locks, electronic stability/traction control and four-wheel anti-lock brakes. A rearview camera, rear park sensors and 911 Direct are optional. 11/29/2013 -

2014 Jaguar XKTimeless and stylish, the Jaguar XK traces its roots to 1948 with the XK120. As its name suggests, the XK120 was capable of 120 mph, quite a feat for its day. The first XK was sporty, stylish and classy. Clark Gable drove one. Today's Jaguar XK is stylish and classy, sporty and capable of very high speeds. As with earlier XKs, it comes in coupe and convertible versions.
The 2014 Jaguar XK lineup starts with the Jaguar XK Touring Coupe and Jaguar XK Touring Convertible. Far from basic, the entry-level Touring models come slathered in leather upholstery with heated front sport seats, satellite radio, rearview camera and parking sensors. One step up are the Jaguar XK Coupe and XK Convertible models, which are more luxurious with an even higher grade of leather, more seat adjustments and upgraded audio.
Jaguar XK models are powered by a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 385 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is an EPA-rated 16/24 mpg City/Highway for the XK Coupe, 16/22 mpg for the XK Convertible.
Jaguar XKR models feature a supercharged version of the same engine, with 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar XKR-S Coupe and XKR-S Convertible feature a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that churns out a breathtaking 550 horsepower and has a top speed of 186 miles per hour, making the XKR-S the fastest production Jag ever. A true leaper, an XKR-S can leap from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds, according to Jaguar. The supercharged XKR and XKR-S coupe and convertible models are EPA-rated 15/22 mpg.
New for 2014 is a range-topping XKR-S GT Coupe. Using the same 550-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine as the XKR-S coupe and convertible, the $174,000 GT offers and features enhanced aerodynamics and suspension tuning. Acceleration performance is quicker, with Jaguar claiming 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Fat chance getting your hands on one, though, as only 25 units of the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT coupe will come to the U.S. They will be as rare as hen's teeth.
In our test drives, we found all the Jaguar XK models solid and stable, even at very high speeds. The 385-hp V8 has plenty of power, while the supercharged versions move the XKR into supercar territory. All Jaguar XK models come with a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters, which we found smooth and tight with rev-matching downshifting.
Ride quality is tough to fault, with an Adaptive Damping System automatically adjusting for ride comfort when cruising along or tightening it down for hard cornering. The more powerful XKR is easy to get out of hand, especially in the more aggressive Dynamic mode, and requires driving with care and respect. All variants of the XK are relatively heavy, but a stiff chassis and precision driving dynamics do a good job handling the weight.
The Jaguar XK runs against tough company, but manages to offer plenty of horsepower and refinement for the money. The BMW 6 Series Coupe is a few thousand dollars less than the XK Touring coupe and boasts classic 50/50 weight distribution, but the BMW has neither the character nor the statement of luxury and exotic sports car that the Jaguar offers. For a few thousand more, you could score a base Porsche 911, if such a thing exists, but forget about any options, unless you want to tack thousands on to the sticker price. Exotics such as the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Audi R8, Maserati GranTurismo Coupe, and Nissan GT-R start in the middle price-wise between the XK and the XKR-S models.

2014 Fiat 500LThere's no doubt the all-new 2014 Fiat 500L will turn heads. The second model to debut since Fiat re-launched in North America, the five-seat 500L boasts stylish Euro design at an attainable price. And unlike the original Fiat 500 which some may dismiss as too tiny, the Fiat 500L boasts cavernous passenger and cargo space, while maintaining a compact footprint and signature Fiat looks.
Built on an all-new platform, the body of the 2014 Fiat 500L shares no common parts with the Fiat 500, yet the family resemblance is clear. Fiat designers say the L in the 500L stands for Loft, and the wagon's spacious, upright design was meant to mimic the high ceilings and artsy vibe found in urban live/work units. Square and rectangular shapes with rounded corners can be found everywhere, from the steering wheel to the taillights.
Compared with the original Fiat 500, the 500L is nearly two feet longer, six inches wider, and six inches taller. Aside from being bigger, the 500L is distinguishable from its smaller predecessor by its stretched-back, oval headlamp housings and its three-piece panoramic windshield. Four versions of the 2014 Fiat 500L are available: Pop, Easy, Trekking, and Lounge. Trekking models have a unique, toothy front grille, as well as different bumpers and side moldings, giving it a rugged look.
All models are powered by a 1.4-liter Multi-Air turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the same found in the sporty Fiat 500 Abarth. It makes 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Gearbox choices include a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Euro twin-clutch transmission. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 25/33 mpg City/Highway with the manual and 24/33 mpg City/Highway with the twin-clutch gearbox. Fiat said a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission will be available.
Spaciousness inside the Fiat 500L is surprising. On the road, the wagon looks relatively compact. Yet inside, the feeling is open and airy, ideal for drivers who feel constricted in smaller wagons and crossovers. However, those who prefer a cabin that envelops its occupants may feel a bit lost in the interior of the 500L, as if they're sloshing around with room to spare.
Standard features on the Fiat 500L are pretty basic, but look for special deals on a package with navigation, rearview camera and rear park assist.
Cargo space is plentiful with 21.3 cubic feet with all seats in place, and much more with the rear seats folded down, making it the roomiest in its class. The rear seats do not automatically fold flush with the rear cargo area, but the cargo floor can be raised to make a completely flat surface.
On the road, the 2014 Fiat 500L offers ample power for everyday driving. The turbocharged engine provides enough oomph for lane changes and uphill climbs. Suspension is firm but not teeth-chattering, and the car stays composed around corners, unless pushed hard. Not everyone will like the feel of the Euro twin-clutch transmission, but it's a good alternative for those who don't want to row through the gears, especially since the point of engagement on the clutch pedal is unusually high on cars equipped with the manual gearbox.
Competitors to the Fiat 500L include other small wagons like the Mini Countryman, which offers its own unique styling and the cachet of the Mini brand, but at a higher price, and boxy, compact utility vehicles like the Kia Soul and Nissan Cube. For those willing to live with a few idiosyncrasies, the 2014 Fiat 500L is a good alternative for those who want space and practicality in a distinctive package.
Model Lineup 2014 Fiat 500L
The 2014 Fiat 500L comes in four trim levels. All are powered by the same 1.4-liter Multi-Air turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed Euro twin-clutch transmission. EPA fuel economy estimates are 25/33 mpg City/Highway with the manual and 24/33 mpg City/Highway with the twin-clutch gearbox.
Fiat 500L Pop ($19,100) comes with fabric upholstery, manually operated air conditioning, manually adjustable seats with driver and passenger height adjustment, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, power windows, remote keyless entry, trip computer, Bluetooth connectivity, the a six-speaker audio system with Fiat's Uconnect interface, a USB port, auxiliary audio jack, heated power outside mirrors, rear window wiper and 16-inch steel wheels with plastic covers; a 6-speed automatic is standard. The Euro twin-clutch transmission ($1,350) is optional.
Fiat 500L Easy ($20,195) adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and front and rear. Wheels are 16-inch aluminum. Options include a Preferred Package ($700) which adds dual-zone automatic climate control, power driver seat with lumbar adjustment, auto-dimming rearview mirror, 115-volt power adapter and rear seat armrest with cup holder; a power sunroof ($950), heated front seats ($350) and a contrast-colored painted roof ($500). The Easy Premier Package plus Beats Audio ($700) comes with a premium 6-speaker audio system with subwoofer, SiriusXM satellite radio with 1-year subscription.
Fiat 500L Trekking ($21,195) gets premium cloth bucket seats, unique interior and exterior trim, floor mats, and 17-inch aluminum wheels with wider 225/45R17 all-season tires.
Fiat 500L Lounge ($24,195) comes standard with the Euro-twin clutch transmission plus automatic dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, four-way power adjustable driver's seat with lumbar, 60/40-split folding rear seats with fore-aft adjustment and a recline and tumble feature; integrated armrest with cup holders, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with compass, fog lamps, chrome body trim and 16-inch aluminum wheels.
A Premier Package ($1,745) for Easy, Trekking and Lounge models includes an upgraded 6.5-inch touchscreen with navigation, rear back-up camera and rear park assist.
Safety features on all models includes multistage front airbags, front seat- mounted side airbags, side-curtain front airbags, driver's knee airbag, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, hill start assist. Rear park assist and a rearview camera are optional. 11/24/2013 -

2014 Ford Transit Connect VanFord has some big plans for its next-generation Transit Connect van. Make that vans, as we'll see the upcoming update yield two distinct new versions, including the Wagon which gets Ford back into the minivan game, and the commercial version of the Transit Connect.
That version has proved to be a surprising success since its introduction three years ago thanks to a flexible design that can readily be converted for use by anyone from a plumber to the owner of a catering company.
The Transit Connect was among the first of the Detroit maker's products designed as part of the so-called One Ford program. Where the automaker traditionally developed different models for key markets like Europe and the U.S., it is now focusing on coming up with designs that can, with only minimal change, be marketed around the world. Ford's European product development team led the Transit Connect program and that meant they put a premium on efficiency, both in terms of space and fuel consumption.
Visually, the new model is more modern and a little less awkward than the original U.S. version of the Transit Connect. Among the design revisions, the 2014 van will pick up the new signature trapezoid grille found on such recent Ford additions as the midsize Fusion sedan.
At less than seven feet tall, the van can fit in just about any urban parking structure, yet it has a surprising amount of cargo space, 127 cubic feet, for a wine or flower merchant, for example, or a caterer. And the distinctive sides also provide a striking mobile billboard.
Though Americans won't get the high-efficiency diesels offered in Europe, Ford still hopes to get bragging rights for the efficiency of the two Stateside offerings once the EPA comes in with final specifications. Currently, the outgoing model's 2.0-liter delivers 21 mpg City, 27 Highway and 23 Combined.
The new Transit Connect Wagon, Ford says, will top 30 on the highway, and that means the lighter commercial van could do even better with the optional 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder. The alternative is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four. The maker hasn't released specs, but the same engines in the new Ford Escape maker 178 horsepower and 168 horsepower, respectively.
A 6-speed automatic gearbox will be the only transmission choice and Ford is going with front-drive only for the U.S. market.
Ford briefly produced an electric version of the original U.S. Transit Connect, a program scrubbed when partner Azure Dynamics went bankrupt. There has been no mention of whether a new EV model might follow, perhaps produced in-house by Ford itself.
But the new Transit Connect will feature plenty of new technology, including Load Adaptive Control, which uses the vehicle's electronic stability control system to adjust the suspension to compensate for changing cargo weight and positioning.
The U.S. version of the new Transit Connect will reach showrooms by the fourth quarter of 2013. 11/20/2013 -

2014 Honda Civic CoupeEnthusiasts caught their first glimpse of the 2014 Honda Civic Coupe, the two-door version of the brand's top-selling compact car, in Las Vegas at the 2013 SEMA Show. It comes nearly a year after Honda's quick refresh of the current-generation Civic sedan, which some say was pushed out hurriedly after the 2012 update flopped with much of the automotive press.
The 2014 Honda Civic Coupe gets a refreshed exterior. Many styling cues on the 2014 Civic Coupe are shared with the four-door sedan, while others are found exclusively on the two-door coupe.
Lines on the 2014 Civic Coupe are more angular and aggressive that the outgoing version, with a new front grille that sweeps across the nose into the redesigned wraparound headlights. Front foglight openings are larger and more imposing, and the lower front air intake forgoes the rounded corners for an angular, hourglass-like shape. From the side, character lines, rocker panels and fender arches are more pronounced, and silhouette is sleeker. Designs for the 17-inch wheels are also new. Taillight lenses and the rear bumper have also been redesigned.
The 2014 Civic Si Coupe is differentiated by unique front and rear air diffusers, redesigned 18-inch wheels and a decklid spoiler.
Powertrains are expected to carry over from the sedan, including a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that makes 140 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic. Civic Si models should get the sedan's 2.4-liter inline-4, with a retuned exhaust system that Honda says will boost power slightly over the sedan to 205 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. As before, the Civic Si will be available only with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Pricing was not announced at SEMA, but we expect only a modest price increase over the 2013 Honda Civic Coupe, which starts at $17,965 MSRP.
Competitors include other sport compact coupes including Kia's redesigned Forte Koup, the Hyundai Elantra coupe and the Scion tC hatch. 11/18/2013 -

2014 BMW 4 Series ConvertibleA drop-top joins the BMW 4 Series lineup, the recently launched two-door model that replaces the outgoing 3 Series coupe and convertible.
The 2014 BMW 4 Series convertible shares the same body and design with the 4 Series coupe, sans the roof and the hardtop's B-pillar.
The convertible's three-piece retractable hardtop is lined with a noise-absorbing headliner, which BMW says is quieter than the old 3 Series convertible and provides added insulation. According to BMW, the power-folding top can completely fold up or down in 20 seconds and operate at speeds of up to 11 miles per hour.
Like the 4 Series coupe, the 4 Series convertible is built on the same architecture as the 3 Series sedan and rides on the same wheelbase, but both 4 Series body styles are slightly wider and nearly two inches lower.
Two engine choices are the same found in the 4 Series coupe: The BMW 428i convertible uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque (just a tad less on both counts than the coupe). A 428i xDrive all-wheel-drive model will also be available.
A more powerful BMW 435i convertible uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 good for 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque, and will be available only with rear-wheel-drive.
All convertible models come with BMW's 8-speed automatic transmission; no manual option is available.
Options and packages are similar to those found on the 4 Series coupe and include a bevvy of interior materials, tech features and electronic driver's aids. Specifically for the convertible, a neck warmer feature is available with the Cold Weather Package. As with the 4 Series coupe and 3 Series sedan, the 4 Series convertible will be available in trim lines with distinctive exterior and interior features. They include the Sport, Luxury M Sport lines.
BMW said the 4 Series convertible will be available in the first quarter of 2014 and will start at $49,675 for the 428i and $55,825 for the 435i. 11/10/2013 -

2014 Volvo S60The 2014 Volvo S60 features fresh styling and an upgraded interior. Launched as a 2011 model, the S60 is a premium compact sedan that fits in the same class as the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Cadillac ATS, Lexus IS, Infiniti G, Buick Regal, and Hyundai Sonata.
Volvo S60 comes in a broad range of models. The 2014 S60 lineup starts with the Volvo S60 T5, which uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5 making 250 horsepower, 6-speed automatic, front-wheel drive standard, all-wheel drive optional. The midlevel S60 T6 AWD, the most popular model, comes with a 300-horsepower turbocharged and intercooled inline-6. Topping the line is the S60 R-Design, which raises the power to 325 horsepower and 354 foot-pounds of torque, a lot of power; R-Design features a sleeker nose, firmer suspension, 18-inch wheels, more seat bolstering, a unique steering wheel and racier instrumentation.
Styling revisions for 2014 begin with new body panels from the windshield pillars forward. A new hood and front fenders surround a widened grille on the 2014 Volvo S60. Headlights have been reshaped for 2014, and a new lower front spoiler has bright trim. Horizontal LED daytime running lights are new for 2014. Also, 17-inch Pandora alloy wheels are standard on the 2014 S60 T5. A new instrument cluster is installed for 2014, with white-illuminated buttons. The tire-pressure monitoring system now lets the driver know which axle has the problem.
Many optional packages have been upgraded for 2014. Among them: Premier trim gets new 17-inch Sadia alloy wheels for 2014, while Premier Plus gains a rear park assist camera, grocery bag holders, and quick-fold front passenger seat. Platinum trim gets auto-dimming, power retractable outside mirrors. The optional Climate Package adds a heated windshield and steering wheel, while the Technology Package adds Cyclist Detection to its Pedestrian Detection system. A new Sport Package for 2014 includes sport seats, paddle shifters, 18-inch Titania alloy wheels, and Volvo's Dynamic Chassis. A new Blind Spot Information System Package includes cross traffic alert, lane-change merge aid, and front/rear park assist. The 2014 S60 T6 now comes standard with paddle shifters (optional for T5), a first for Volvo. New Advanced Quick Shift shortens gear-change speed by 20-30 percent for third to sixth gears, and up to 50 percent from first to second. New 18-inch Titania alloy wheels go on the S60 T6 AWD sedan, which gains Keyless Drive. T6 options now include 17-inch Sadia alloy wheels, or 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels with a lowered sport chassis. The S60 T6 R-Design AWD gains a digital compass, plus a Homelink remote garage door opener.
The Volvo S60 is stylish, clean and sophisticated. Same with the interior.
The S60 T6 uses Volvo's Dynamic Chassis, while the S60 T5 uses the Touring Chassis. Differences lie in the stiffness of bushings, springs and dampers. Each chassis delivers excellent handling. The all-wheel-drive T6 offers secure cornering. Even the front-wheel-drive T5 features Corner Traction Control by Torque Vectoring, which moves torque to the outside wheel/wheels to help steer the car around a turn.
The T5 engine is a 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder turbo, making an impressive 250 horsepower with 266 foot-pounds of torque. The EPA estimates the front-drive T5 will get 21/30 mpg City/Highway. We think the T5 offers good value, considering its power, safety engineering, comfort and style.
The T6 engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged intercooled inline six-cylinder, making 300 horsepower, and 325 pound-feet of torque at a low 2100 rpm. Wonderfully smooth and quick when passing on two-lanes, it gets an EPA-estimated 18/25 mpg City/Highway. The pumped-up S60 R-Design gets the same fuel economy rating.
The S60 R-Design makes 25 more horsepower and 29 more foot-pounds of torque than the 300-hp T6, thanks to ECM programming for more boost, fuel, and sharper throttle response. It's quite noticeable in track driving, where it's a good thing the suspension is stiffer. Despite Torque Vectoring, it still understeers when cornered at the limit.

2014 BMW 4 SeriesIt's the dawn of a new era. Previously part of the venerable 3 Series lineup, BMW's compact sports coupe has been spun off as the 4 Series, an all-new two door with lower, wider proportions, ample power and the bevvy of technology that BMW is known for. The new BMW 4 Series models seat four.
Built on the same architecture as the 3 Series sedan, the BMW 4 Series rides on the same 110.6-inch wheelbase, but is slightly wider and nearly two inches lower.
The 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe is powered by the same engines found in the 3 Series sedan and comes in two variants: the BMW 428i and the BMW 435i, both available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The BMW 428i uses the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, just a skosh more than its 3 Series counterpart. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic; all-wheel-drive BMW 428i xDrive models come with the automatic only. According to BMW, the 428i can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds with either transmission on RWD models, or just 5.6 seconds with all-wheel drive.
As with many new vehicles, the automatic transmission used on the 4 Series surpasses the manual gearbox when it comes to efficiency. Fuel economy estimates for the BMW 428i are an EPA-estimated 22/34 mpg City/Highway with the 6-speed manual, 23/35 mpg City/Highway with the automatic on RWD models. Fuel economy for BMW 428i xDrive dips slightly to 22/33 mpg City/Highway with its AWD and automatic.
Most powerful is the BMW 435i, with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that makes 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, two horses more powerful but five pound-feet less than the 335i. Transmission choices are the same 6-speed manual or 8-speed auto. Not only is BMW's 8-speed automatic more efficient; it's also quicker. A BMW 435i equipped with the auto achieves a quick 0-60 mph time of 5 seconds flat. With the manual, the 435i can go from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
Fuel economy estimates for the BMW 435i are 20/30 mpg City/Highway with the manual transmission and 22/32 mpg City/Highway with the automatic on RWD cars; xDrive versions earn an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg with the manual and 20/30 mpg with the automatic.
A concept version of a BMW M4 was unveiled at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, giving us a hint of what might be in the near future. There was talk of a 450-hp twin-turbocharged inline-6 and body panels made of lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber.
For 2014, BMW is including its emergency crash notification system, BMW Assist eCall, on all its models, along with 10 years of service.
Interior materials in the 2014 BMW 4 Series are similar to those found on the 3 Series, though the 4 Series cabin design is clearly more driver-oriented. The center stack is slightly canted to the left, and the narrow, tapered center console sits high, cordoning off the driver in her own little cocoon. The iDrive controller and a color screen are standard. For the most part, interior materials match the quality expected from BMW, but in some cases come up short, like the metallic blue and textured silver trim on Sport Line models, which in our opinion look cheap and stuck-on.
BMW designers claim the company's even-numbered vehicles are more significant and unique than their odd-numbered counterparts (consider the 6 Series or the defunct 8 Series). But we're not convinced the 4 Series is exceptional enough to fit into this category, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's more evolutionary than revolutionary, and is clearly recognizable as a 3 Series coupe successor. Prospective buyers should also realize the 4 Series starts at nearly $4,000 more than the equivalent 3 Series sedan.
Still, the 2014 BMW 4 Series is poised to become a leader among luxury compact sport coupes in a relatively small class that includes the Audi A5, Infiniti Q60 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe.
Model Lineup
The 2014 BMW 4 Series comes in two variants: BMW 428i and BMW 435i. Each is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Most variants are available with a choice of 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission.
BMW 428i models come with a 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 241 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque and are available with rear-wheel drive ($40,500) or xDrive all-wheel drive ($42,500). Standard features include automatic climate control, SensaTec vinyl upholstery, eight-way power front seats with driver memory, pushbutton start, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with controls, cruise control, onboard computer, Bluetooth, BMW's iDrive interface with 6.5-inch display screen, audio system with CD player, HD radio and USB port, universal garage door opener, split folding rear seat, power moonroof, foglamps, rain-sensing automatic wipers, xenon adaptive headlights with auto-leveling, power folding exterior mirrors with automatic dimming, and 17-inch alloy wheels with run-flat, all-season tires. An automatic stop/start feature is also included.
BMW 435i models are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that makes 302 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, and come with rear-wheel drive ($46,000) or xDrive all-wheel drive ($48,000). Standard features include those listed above plus an anti-theft alarm system; wheels are 18-inch alloys with run-flat, all-season tires.
Three trim packages are available for 4 Series: Luxury, Sport and M Sport. Each has unique wheels, exterior trim, interior styling, wheels and suspension tuning. Other options include the Cold Weather Package ($950), which adds a heated front and rear seats, a steering wheel and retractable headlight washers; Dynamic Handling Package ($1,000), which adds adaptive M suspension and variable sport steering; a Premium Package ($2,200), which includes leather upholstery, keyless access, lumbar support and satellite radio with one year subscription. The Technology Package ($3,150) adds navigation with real-time traffic information and touchpad control, head-up display, the BMW Apps interface and enhanced Bluetooth and smartphone integration. Standalone options include leather upholstery ($1,450), heated front seats ($500), navigation ($2,150), Harman Kardon surround audio system ($875) and a variety of wheel options.
Safety features standard on all 4 Series include front-impact airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of impact, front passenger side-impact airbags, full-cabin, curtain-type head protection airbags, ABS, stability control, traction control and BMW Assist eCall crash notification system. Safety options include a Driver Assistance Package ($950) with a rearview camera and park distance control. The Driver Assistance Plus Package ($1,900) adds side and top view cameras plus several active safety features like blind spot detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian warning and collision mitigation. All-wheel drive can improve handling stability on slippery surfaces. 10/17/2013 -

2013 Audi A4he 2013 Audi A4 and S4, last redesigned for 2009, have been freshened on the outside and refined on the inside. Mechanically, the only significant change to the standard model is that it now has electric power steering, a year or two behind many other carmakers. Possibly the biggest change is what isn't here: the A4 Avant wagon is discontinued, replaced by an all-new allroad model for 2013.
The Audi A4 is a premium compact sedan with a brilliant venerable 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, smooth ride, and classy interior, including standard leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and available features found on larger luxury cars. Front-wheel drive with a CVT transmission is standard, while quattro all-wheel-drive with a Tiptronic 8-speed automatic transmission is available.
2013 Audi A4 competitors include the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS, Acura ILX, Infiniti G, Cadillac ATS, Buick Regal and Hyundai Sonata. The S4 occupies something of a niche, as many of its competitors are either dated or more expensive. The A4 does well against its competition in the areas of fuel economy and passenger room, and is superior in all-weather capability.
The 2013 A4 and S4 get a streamlined version of the MMI Navigation system and controls, reducing the number of buttons from eight to four, and the three-zone climate control system has been slightly simplified.
The A4 styling is clean but not dynamic. The 2013 A4 gets a new grille that's more angled in the upper corners, dynamic new hood lines, new bumpers with angular air inlets, and sleek headlamps with LED daytime running lights. Optional lighting includes halogen cornering lamps added to the adaptive system, and LED taillights. New wheel designs, from 17 to 19 inches, are also available.
The 2013 Audi S4 gets the same updates as the 2013 A4, including new headlights, a new front fascia, a new rear trunklid/spoiler. The 2013 S4 gets the same interior upgrades as well.
The cabin features a lot of controls, all easy to reach. The seats are excellent, with Nappa leather standard. New trim on the dash for 2013 includes more chrome than before, with inlays in aluminum, walnut, ash, or oak. It's unlikely you'll find a more appealing interior at the A4's base price.
The rear seat offers 35.2 inches of legroom, about average against its competition: same as the BMW 3 Series. Trunk space is 12.4 cubic feet, about the same as the 3 Series.
On the road, smooth or bumpy, the A4 is solid, firm and stable. It's easy and enjoyable to drive, and rides like a larger car.
The A4 quattro is very adept in snow and rain, at the top of its class of models with all-wheel drive, where it performs favorably against the BMW 328iX, Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic, and Lexus IS250 AWD. Audi has been at the all-wheel drive game longer than them and has a winning rallying heritage, racing over unpaved roads. With front-wheel drive, the A4's cornering is not as precise as a rear-wheel-drive BMW 3 Series.
Audi's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is silky smooth and the torque range is exceptionally broad, so there's responsive acceleration at any time. All A4s come with this engine.
The Tiptronic 8-speed automatic is a brilliant transmission, fast-shifting and obedient, with rev-matching downshifting. Opting for the 6-speed manual gearbox, however, turns an A4 quattro into a sporty sedan. Shifting is precise and pleasurable, the clutch is easy, and the redline is way up there at about 6500 rpm. We loved it.
The high-performance Audi S4 features a 333-horsepower supercharged V6, quattro all-wheel drive, and sport suspension. The S4 looks different than the A4, with its own grille, along with a front splitter, rear diffuser, and unique exhaust. It's got a special interior, including well-bolstered seats in Alcantara leather with contrast stitching. New interior options for 2013 include a flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel, high-gloss piano black trim with stainless steel mesh inlays, and Nappa leather.
Model Lineup 2013 Audi A4
Every A4 uses the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, with three transmissions to choose from: an 8-speed continuously variable transmission, a 6-speed manual, or an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic. Front-wheel-drive models only come with the CVT. Three trim levels are available: Premium, Premium Plus, Prestige.
Premium comes standard with leather upholstery, power sunroof, single-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats, sound system with XM radio and single CD, power windows and locks, halogen headlamps, and 17-inch wheels with all-season tires. A4 Premium comes with FWD CVT ($32,500), quattro 6-speed manual ($33,400), and quattro 8-speed Tiptronic ($34,600).
Premium Plus FWD CVT ($36,700) upgrades with heated front seats with memory, heated mirrors, split-folding rear seat, three-zone climate control, Audi music interface with iPod cable, xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and taillights, and 18-inch wheels with wider all-season tires. Premium Plus is also available as an A4 quattro with 6-speed manual ($900) or an A4 quattro with Tiptronic ($2100).
Prestige ($42,250) adds adaptive headlamps, MMI navigation, Audi side assist, and Bang & Olufsen sound system. Prestige is available as an A4 quattro with 6-speed manual ($900) or an A4 quattro with Tiptronic ($2100).
Audi S4 uses a 3.6-liter V6 with quattro, and either a 6-speed manual ($47,600) or 7-speed S tronic transmission ($49,000). S4 starts with Premium Plus trim, but also includes Alcantara leather, 12-way power driver seat, sport suspension and brakes, and 18-inch wheels with summer tires.
The S4 Prestige is available with manual ($53,850) or S tronic ($55,250).
Safety equipment on all A4 and S4 models includes eight airbags, electronic stability control with anti-lock brakes and hydraulic brake assist, crash sensor activation, child door locks and LATCH seat system, and tire pressure monitor. Available all-wheel drive improves handling stability in slippery conditions. An optional rearview camera can help the driver spot a child behind the car when backing up. Rear side-impact airbags can help protect outboard rear-seat passengers in a side impact. 10/17/2013 -

2013 BMW 3 SeriesThe BMW 3 Series continues to be a staple of the BMW model lineup. The compact luxury car now has more variants than ever, and with its combination of new and carryover models, it can be confusing to sort out which is which.
Sedans were completely redesigned for 2012 and carry over basically unchanged for 2013. Known as the F30, the sixth-generation four-door marks the end of BMW's old E-code naming scheme. They're slightly bigger, faster and more fuel-efficient than the previous E90 generation (2006-2011).
New to the lineup this year is the 2013 BMW 320i, an entry-level 3 Series sedan that uses a less powerful version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the BMW 328i. It's available with either rear- or all-wheel drive and makes a modest 180 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic. Manuals are only available on rear-wheel-drive cars, while BMW's xDrive AWD models are only available with the automatic. Performance isn't the 320i's strong suit, with a relatively pokey 0-60 mph time of 7.1 seconds with either transmission, although it's on par with the Mercedes-Benz C250. Speed is electronically limited at 130 mph. For more oomph, the BMW 328i uses a more powerful version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4, good for 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. BMW says the 328i can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds with 8-speed automatic or in just 5.7 seconds with the 6-speed manual. This same feat takes the Audi A4 2.0T 6.5 seconds. For 2014, a diesel version, dubbed the 328d, will be available in the U.S.
The quickest of the lot is the BMW 335i, powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that makes 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices are the same 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic, with a 0-60 mph time of just 5.4 seconds with either gearbox.
Fuel economy estimates for the 2013 BMW 320i sedans are 23/36 mpg City/Highway equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, 24/36 mpg with the automatic, 23/35 mpg for the all-wheel-drive BMW 320i xDrive model. The BMW 328i achieves an EPA-estimated 22/35 mpg City/Highway with the 6-speed manual, and 23/33 mpg with the automatic on both RWD and AWD models. The BMW 335i rates just 20/30 mpg with 6-speed manual, but an impressive 23/33 mpg with the 8-speed automatic. The BMW 335i xDrive gets 20/28 mpg with the manual and 20/30 mpg with the automatic. Premium gasoline is required for all 3 Series models.
Also new for 2013 is the ActiveHybrid3. The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid3 pairs the 335i's engine to an electric motor, the 8-speed automatic and a lithium-ion battery. It's good for 335 horsepower net and 330 pound-feet of torque, yet despite promises of increased efficiency, the hybrid only slightly bests the gasoline-powered models with 25/33 mpg City/Highway. Considering the near-$15,000 price premium, we recommend sticking with the 328i for the best combination of performance and frugality. The ActiveHybrid3 offers lower emissions, however.
Coupe and convertible versions of the 3 Series, meanwhile, carry over from the old E92 and E93 body styles. (Read our 2011 reviews of them for detailed impressions.) BMW 328i coupes and convertibles get a 3.0-liter inline-6 that makes 230 hp and 200 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. 335i coupes and convertibles are powered by the same turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 found in the sedans.
2013 is the last year of production for the current-generation 3 Series coupe, which will be redesigned and renamed the BMW 4 Series. Look for the coupe and cabriolet to be redesigned and introduced as either 2013 or 2014 models. Also coming for 2014 is an all-new BMW Sport Wagon, based on the new generation of 3 Series sedans.
The BMW 3 Series remains the benchmark among luxury compact sports sedans, a class that includes the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and Lexus IS, all strong entries. This class is mostly rear-wheel drive, though Audi is the exception with its front-wheel drive platform. Other front-wheel-drive entry-luxury cars, such as the Lexus ES, are comparable from a features standpoint and are similarly sized but do not offer the sporty dynamics of the rear-wheel-drive based sports sedans. All are superb cars, but the 3 Series sedans in particular display a brilliant balance between performance and driving pleasure.
Model Lineup 2013 BMW 3 Series
The 2013 BMW 320i sedan ($32,55) uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 and comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette (vinyl) upholstery, eight-way manually adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, a trip computer, Bluetooth, BMW's iDrive interface with a 6.5-inch display screen, a premium audio system with CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack and USB port, foglamps, automatic wipers and 17-inch alloy wheels. An automatic stop/start feature is also included to help save fuel. The 320i xDrive adds all-wheel drive ($34,550).
Stepping up to the BMW 328i ($36,850) gets you a more powerful version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 and adds eight-way power-adjustable front seats, driver memory functions, a rearview camera and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The BMW 328i xDrive adds all-wheel drive ($38,850).
The BMW 335i ($43,150), 335i xDrive ($45,150), and ActiveHybrid3 ($49,650) sedans use a 300-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 and include a moonroof, xenon HID headlights with adaptive and auto-leveling features, and 18-inch wheels. ActiveHybrid3 includes electric propulsion to improve fuel economy.
Dakota leather upholstery ($1,450) is optional for both models. A Technology Package ($2,550) includes navigation system, real-time traffic information, head-up display; the Premium Sound Package ($950) includes Harman Kardon surround sound with satellite radio and one-year subscription; the Parking Package ($1,550) includes rearview camera, side and top-view cameras, park distance control; the Driver Assistance Package ($1,100) includes Lane Departure Warning and Active Blind Spot Detection. The Cold Weather Package ($1,350) adds heated seats front and rear, heated steering wheel, retractable headlight washers, split-folding rear seat.
Coupes and convertibles are based on the outgoing E92/E93 body styles and have a sport-tuned suspension. Standard equipment is similar to that on the sedans; adaptive xenon headlights and a 60/40-split-folding rear seat are standard. Convertibles come with a power-retractable hardtop and 10-way power front seats with memory functions.
Safety features include front-impact airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of impact, front passenger side-impact airbags and full-cabin, curtain-type head protection airbags. Active safety features designed to help the driver avoid collisions include Dynamic Stability Control and the latest generation antilock brakes. The ABS preloads the brake pedal when the driver suddenly lifts off the gas pedal, and includes a feature that lightly sweeps the brake discs dry every 1.5 seconds when it's raining. Run-flat tires eliminate the need to change a tire on the road. Optional rearview camera and side and top-view cameras can help the driver spot a child behind the car when backing up. Lane Departure Warning and Active Blind Spot Detection are optional.
