2014 Fiat Abarth Cabrio
2014 Fiat Abarth Cabrio
With its sportier engine and track-tuned suspension, the Fiat 500 Abarth pumped some passion into the Italian brand when it was added to the line-up last year. But what to do about those who wanted a convertible version of the Abarth minicar?

Not to worry. Fiat has pulled the wraps off its second convertible, the sportier Fiat 500c Abarth Cabrio, and despite the soft top it's got the same, fast-beating heart of the two-door. That means the cabriolet will still make 155 horsepower out of the distinctive Fiat 1.4-liter MultiAir engine, though that kicks up to 160 hp in Sport Mode, and 174 pound-feet of torque. Both Abarth models are offered exclusively with 5-speed manual transmissions.

Not sure how to use one? No problem, as both the Abarth Coupe and Cabrio come standard with a free day of track driving and instructions from the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

The Abarth Cabrio adopts the same rollback roof as on the standard Fiat 500c convertible. It's not quite the same open air experience as you'll get on more traditional convertibles, more like a windshield-to-decklid sunroof, but it's a simple-to-operate system that can be rolled halfway back at speeds up to 60 mph, and folded completely away at speeds up to 50.

And unlike conventional ragtops, the Fiat 500c Abarth maintains the same trunk space as the coupe model.

Beyond some subtle exterior cues, including the classic scorpion Abarth logo, the ride height is lowered and there's a distinctive Abarth rear diffuser and dual exhaust, also found on the coupe version.

Compared to the plain vanilla Fiat 500c, the Abarth Convertible gets stiffer springs and other suspension upgrades, larger half-shafts and CV joints, a quicker steering rack and upgraded brakes, as well as 16-inch steel wheels, with 17-inch forged alloy wheels optional.

The Abarth version offers three electronic stability control modes, including a full-off position that's perfect for track driving. While Fiat has yet to disclose performance numbers, the Abarth coupe has been generating 0-60 mph acceleration times of around 7 seconds in published reports, three seconds quicker than the base Fiat 500, and the Abarth Cabrio shouldn't be far behind the coupe considering it only gains 33 pounds.

The Abarth Cabrio will also offer an optional Beats by Dr. Dre sound system.

Look for the Fiat Abarth Cabrio to roll into U.S. showrooms during the first quarter of 2013. Pricing has yet to be released, but considering the Abarth Coupe carries a premium of several thousand dollars over the standard Fiat 500 coupe at $22,700 (including delivery charges), that's likely to hold true for the Cabrio.

2014 Audi R8
2014 Audi R8
The Audi R8 is the sporty spearhead of the Audi lineup. Its beauty and handling prowess have been well documented, and subtle tweaks make the 2014 Audi R8 even better.

Audi named the R8 after its Le Mans-winning sports car, bringing the first road car R8 to the market in 2007. Originally only available with a 4.2-liter V8, in December 2008 Audi unveiled the 5.2-liter V10 model that was based on the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 engine.

The V8 delivers 430 horsepower, the V10 525 hp. For 2014, a new model arrives on the block boasting 550 hp: the 2014 R8 V10 Plus.

Both the V8 and V10 are available as a Coupe or Spyder, with the V10 Plus only offered as a Coupe. The R8 V10 Plus is faster, lighter, with carbon ceramic brakes coming as standard.

All R8 models are brilliant machines to drive. They are track-munching animals, yet at the same time able to handle adverse weather conditions up snowy alpine passes in the Austrian Alps (believe me, I tried it). The mid-engine supercar contains enough frontal storage for a carry-on bag, backpack and a jacket, making it comparably efficient for cars of this nature.

The R8 cabin is as luxurious as you would expect from a high-end Audi, and yet it does not feel pretentious. The navigation leaves a bit to be desired, however. Overall, the 2014 R8 is a solid step forward from an already decorated machine.

The biggest updates for the 2014 Audi R8 come in the form of the 7-speed S-Tronic dual clutch transmission, which replaces the R-Tronic single clutch gearbox. The biggest fault with the 2012 R8 was the R-Tronic's snappy and abrupt shifting. The S-Tronic cures all the deficiencies of old. And with the addition of launch control, the R8 is a contender to dust off any Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz SL AMG, Nissan GT-R and frankly any other sports/supercar you can dream up.

Model Lineup

The 2014 Audi R8 is offered as either a coupe or convertible, with V8 or V10 power. All R8s are mid-engine with the Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system.

The Audi R8 4.2 quattro Coupe comes with a 430-hp V8 and the standard 6-speed manual gearbox. Leather seats, climate control, tilt-telescoping flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel, AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sirius XM stereo, Bluetooth, USB, cruise control, trip computer, bi-Xenon headlamps and 18-inch alloy wheels are standard.

The R8 4.2 quattro Spyder is equipped much like the Coupe, with the addition of a hydraulic soft top (offered in black, brown or red) and takes 19-seconds to open at speeds of up to 30 mph.

Options include the S-Tronic dual clutch transmission, 10-way power seats, Audi magnetic ride shocks, Nappa leather, carbon ceramic brakes, extended leather package, convenience package with rearview camera, auto-dimming heated folding outside mirrors, navigation, alternate wheel styles/finishes, metallic paint, 465-watt 12-speaker Bang & Olufson sound system, Alcantara headliner, piano black cabin trim, carbon fiber trim, illuminated door sills and metallic paints.

The Audi R8 5.2 quattro Coupe comes with the 525-hp V10 engine, Nappa leather, LED headlights, Bang & Olufson sound system, navigation and rearview camera.

The Audi R8 quattro Spyder includes everything from both the V8 and V10 Coupe and of course the hydraulic soft top.

Options for the 5.2 V10 include the enhanced leather package, S-Tronic gearbox, cosmetic upgrades of the V8, carbon fiber, piano black, alternate colors/finishes, headliner and door sills.

The Audi R8 quattro 5.2 Plus Coupe comes with the massaged V10 engine producing 550 hp. It comes with everything from the V8 and V10, including all the options. No Spyder is offered in the Plus.

Safety features that come standard include frontal airbags, head/chest side-impact airbags, knee airbags, pop-up roll bars on Spyder, electronic stability control and all-wheel drive. Rearview camera is an optional device that improves safety.

2014 Kia Forte
2014 Kia Forte
Kia Forte is all-new for 2014. The 2014 Kia Forte was launched as a four-door sedan, while the 2014 Forte 5-Door hatchback joins the lineup late in the model year (late summer 2013).

As the compact car segment expands to dominate the US market, manufacturers are increasingly recalibrating their offerings to provide style, luxury and safety at a level undreamt of just a few years ago in small cars. While the size of vehicles (and their impact on the environment) shrinks in response to consumers' changing needs, the expectation now is of elevated levels of equipment, sophistication and elegance. This explains Kia's accelerated development cycle on its Forte model. This new fifth generation, 2014 Forte has come out just three-and-a-half years after the appearance of its predecessor. When that car emerged, the marketplace was not as thronged with comprehensively equipped, stylish offerings as it is now, so the new Forte's timing could not be better. Kia says its new Forte was designed to satisfy both sides of the brain: the creative and the practical.

All-new, the 2014 Kia Forte sedan features swoopy and contemporary styling, while the Forte 5-door offers European style and hatchback practicality.

There's a choice of engines, a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with variable inlet-valve timing that produces 148-horsepower at 6500 rpm, a direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 173 horsepower at 6500 rpm, and a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine rated at 201 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 195 pound-feet of toque between 1750-4500 rpm.

The $16,000 Forte LX sedan comes with the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Stepping up to the Forte EX sedan or 5-door grants an owner the benefit of the 2.0-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder engine good for 173 horsepower. The turbocharged 1.6-liter engine is exclusively available on the Forte SX 5-door.

Forte 5-door also features a sport-tuned suspension.

Many of the essential items like ABS, air conditioning, Bluetooth, satellite radio and Kia's comprehensive safety equipment are standard on all models. Yet the options list offers items not usually found on cars of this class, like a ventilated driver's seat, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and puddle lamps at the doorhandles.

Add rigorous noise and vibration-reducing measures, as well as careful suspension upgrades, and you're left with an impression of more refinement and elegance than one might expect from a car as affordable as the Forte.

Model Lineup 2014 Kia Forte

The 2014 Kia Forte is available as a four-door sedan and a 5-Door hatchback, the latter expected to be available the third quarter of 2013.

Forte LX sedan comes equipped with the 1.8-liter engine. Forte LX ($16,000) comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission (an automatic is optional), 15-inch steel wheels, satellite radio, Bluetooth technology, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, trip computer, air conditioning, power windows and locks.

Forte EX sedan and 5-door come with a direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing and this engine produces 173 horsepower at 6500 rpm. Forte EX sedan ($18,000) and 5-door come standard with 6-speed automatic transmission, 16-inch alloy wheels, body color mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, fog- and LED positioning lights, six-speaker stereo, UVO telematics package, rear camera display, cruise control with wheel-mounted controls, keyless entry and Flexsteer variable steering assist.

Forte SX 5-door features a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine rated at 201 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 195 pound-feet of toque between 1750-4500 rpm and is offered with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

An optional Premium Package includes heated front and rear seats, a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat with air-cooled ventilation, leather seat trim, power sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels and push button start with Smart Key and a heated steering wheel. The Technology Package adds HID headlights, LED tail lights, a 4.2-inch color LCD cluster screen and dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation.

2014 Nissan Versa Note
2014 Nissan Versa Note
Overview

The 2014 Nissan Versa Note is an all-new model that replaces the outgoing Versa hatchback. A five-door hatch that seats five, the Versa Note is a roomy, practical subcompact that offers some of the best cargo and passenger space around.

In past years the Versa hatchback and sedan were lumped together as different variants of the same model, but Nissan marketing execs now say they consider the Versa Note its own standalone model, with different attributes aimed at different buyers (although in nearly the same breath, they will tout the Versa as the best-selling entry-level car based on combined sales figures for both body styles).

Practicality is the Versa Note's strong suit. Compared with other subcompact hatches, the Versa Note boasts the most front headroom, rear legroom and cargo space. It doesn't pretend to be something it's not. Its styling doesn't scream for attention, yet it's not boring, either. It does just what it's supposed to do: carry lots of stuff at a reasonable price while achieving good gas mileage.

When measured against the outgoing Versa hatchback, the Versa Note is about six inches shorter, although the length of the wheelbase stays the same. The difference is in the overhangs, where Nissan chopped both front and rear to improve handling while maintaining, and in some cases even increasing, interior space.

Powering the Versa Note is the same engine found in the sedan: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder good for a modest but effective 109 horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the base model, while an all-new continuously variable transmission (CVT) comes on higher trim levels. Significantly, this revised CVT uses a secondary set of gears on the low end to help reduce the sluggish, rubber-band feel from which most CVTs suffer. As a result, the Versa Note has adequate oomph at lower speeds, and most people won't even notice they're not driving a regular automatic transmission.

Fuel economy is another major selling point for for the Nissan Versa Note, and is improved by 17 percent over the outgoing hatch thanks in part to a weight reduction of nearly 300 pounds, plus added technology such as dual fuel injection. Additional aerodynamic enhancements also help to make the Versa Note more slippery. The result is an impressive EPA-estimated 31/40 mpg City/Highway with the CVT. The base manual doesn't fare as well, earning 27/36 mpg City/Highway.

Rear cargo space is an impressive 21.4 cubic feet, the most of any small hatch currently on the market. Rear seats fold down 60/40, and an optional folding cargo floor on upper trim levels adjusts to create a completely flat load surface.

Although its low starting price will attract many to the Nissan Note, there are also plenty of new features and options for anyone looking to soup up their hatch. Fully loaded, the 2014 Versa Note surpasses the $19k mark including destination for the top-of-the-line model with navigation and a 360-degree parking monitor (the latter of which is a first in a Nissan vehicle). But Nissan expects their $16,000 SV model to be the most popular choice, equipped with the CVT and a few tech features like Bluetooth. For the truly budget-conscious, it's important to note that maximum fuel economy comes only with the CVT, which starts at $1,200 more than the base price.

Entry-level hatchbacks such as the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio and Toyota Yaris compete with the 2014 Nissan Versa Note. Of all these, the Note offers the most rear cargo space and rear legroom, making it ideal for those who want maximum roominess for the money.

Model Lineup

All 2014 Nissan Versa Note models are powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 109 horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque.

Versa Note S ($13,990) comes equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and includes manually operated air conditioning, cloth interior, four-way manually adjustable front seats, telescoping steering wheel, manual roll-down windows, manual door locks, a trip computer, audio system with CD player and auxiliary audio jack and 15-inch steel wheels with wheel covers.

Versa Note S Plus CVT ($15,240) gets the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) plus cruise control and aerodynamic enhancements like an active grille shutter.

Versa Note SV models ($15,990) get upgraded cloth upholstery, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, cloth door trim, Bluetooth handsfree phone connectivity, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth controls, a driver's seat arm rest and silver-toned interior and exterior trim. A Convenience Package ($540) adds a folding rear seat armrest with cup holders, an adjustable cargo floor, rear parking monitor, USB audio port, satellite radio capability and a 4.3-inch audio display screen.

Versa Note SL ($17,690) adds everything on the Convenience Package plus pushbutton start, heated front seats, variable intermittent windshield wipers, front fog lights, a tire-filling alert feature, engine immobilizer and 16-inch alloy wheels. A Tech Package ($800) adds navigation with the NissanConnect interface, a 360-degree parking monitor and heated side-view mirrors.

Safety features on all 2014 Nissan Versa Note models include front airbags, front-seat-mounted side-impact airbags, roof-mounted side curtain airbags, antilock brakes (ABS), traction control, stability control, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and brake assist.

2014 Mazda 6
2014 Mazda 6
Overview

With a stunning new design, a retooled powertrain and more standard features, the 2014 Mazda6 is a great alternative in a sea of boring family sedans. Combined with Mazda's famously sporty driving dynamics, the Mazda6 earns its place as one of the coolest cars its class, without sacrificing the practicality of a midsize four-door.

Everything is new, from bold exterior lines inspired by Mazda's Shinari concept car to the powertrain. Even the manufacturing process was retooled at Mazda's assembly plant in Hiroshima, Japan for faster, more flexible production.

The Mazda6 uses Mazda's Skyactive technology, a collection of systems and techniques first employed on the CX-5 crossover that reduce weight and increase efficiency. At the heart of it lies a 2.5-liter inline-4 that makes 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque (Mazda said sayonara to the old V6). A new injection system and race-style exhaust manifold help the new Mazda6 achieve more torque and power than the previous engines, while reducing emissions.

The standard transmission on the base model is a 6-speed manual, which now comes standard with a hill-hold feature. An all-new automatic transmission is standard on the mid-level Touring and upper Grand Touring model. It's a hybrid of a traditional torque converter, which kicks in at speeds of less than 5 mph, providing the driver with the familiar creep of automatic transmissions, and a dual-clutch that operates at higher speeds, providing quicker, more seamless shifts. Like most cars in this class, Mazda6 is front-wheel drive.

Other elements of Skyactive include a lighter, more efficient frame, which engineers tweaked using straighter lines and different welds. High-tensile steel comprises 58 percent of the Mazda6's body weight, which is a relatively lean 3,183 pounds on the base model with the manual transmission. That's a few pounds lighter than the Honda Accord, and nearly 300 pounds lighter than the Ford Fusion. Other changes include fully electric steering and a revised suspension, which result in a more dialed-in feel, with less road shock and more stability under braking.

The new package results in a significant improvement in fuel economy over the outgoing model. EPA estimates for the 2014 Mazda6 are 25/37 mpg City/Highway with the manual and 26/38 mpg City/Highway with the automatic, up from 21/30 mpg in the previous model with either transmission.

New standard features make their way onto the new Mazda6, including push-button start, a USB port, 17-inch alloy wheels on the base model, and 19-inch alloys on the top-tier Grand Touring trim. Strangely, though, Bluetooth does not appear on the base Sport trim with the manual transmission; this requires a step up to the automatic. It's a curious move, considering Bluetooth connectivity comes standard on many smaller cars these days, not to mention that someone who drives stick could benefit even more from the hands-free feature.

Standard on the top-tier Mazda6 Grand Touring model and optional on the mid-grade trim is a bevy of new safety tech, including a blind spot monitoring system with cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, radar-based adaptive cruise control and forward obstruction warning. These features will alert the driver to potential problems, but unlike some current safety systems, the ones found on the Mazda6 won't brake automatically or drive the car for you. Mazda's approach leaves the action to the driver, encouraging personal responsibility in an age full of electronic babysitters.

Later this year, the Mazda6 will be available in a 2.2-liter clean diesel version, as well as in a gasoline variant that uses a proprietary regenerative braking system, called i-ELOOP, which should improve fuel economy over the current Mazda6 models (although Mazda execs decline to say exactly how much of an improvement that might be).

Competitors to the Mazda6 include front-wheel-drive midsize sedans such as the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry. The Mazda is the sportiest of the bunch, although those who choose a car based primarily on driving dynamics might also consider the Volkswagen Passat.

Model Lineup 2014 Mazda 6

The 2014 Mazda 6 is available in three trims: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. All come with the same 2.5-liter engine; all but Sport come standard with the 6-speed automatic.

Mazda6 Sport ($20,880) comes standard with the 6-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, fabric upholstery, six-way manually adjustable driver's seat, leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel, steering-wheel mounted controls, power door locks/windows/mirrors, remote keyless entry, pushbutton start, cruise control, trip computer, 6-speaker audio system with CD player, auxiliary jack, USB port, 60/40 split folding rear seat, USB port, 17-inch alloy wheels. When equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission ($22,495), the Sport model also gets Bluetooth connectivity, HD radio, a 5.8-inch color touchscreen display and a rearview camera.

Mazda6 Touring ($24,495) with 6-speed automatic includes everything on the Sport trim plus dual-zone automatic climate control, 6-way power driver's seat, leatherette upholstery, center console sliding armrest, blind spot monitoring system and cross-traffic alert. Wheels are 19-inch alloys. The Touring Technology package ($2,000) includes navigation, a Bose 11-speaker audio System,? Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, auto-dimming driver's side mirror and heated side mirrors.

Mazda6 Grand Touring ($29,495) includes the 6-speed automatic and everything found on the Touring model with the Touring Technology package plus leather upholstery, heated front seats, 8-way power driver's seat with power lumbar and memory function, steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, satellite radio capability, a power sunroof, bi-xenon HID headlights, fog lamps, ?LED daytime running lamps, adaptive front-lighting system, an alarm system, a rear lip spoiler and unique paint on the alloy wheels.

Safety features on all models include two-stage front-impact airbags, front side-impact airbags, front and rear side air curtains, antilock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and brake assist, dynamic stability control (DSC), traction control, tire-pressure monitor, LATCH child safety seat anchors and hill hold assist. Optional safety features include a rearview camera that can help the driver spot a small child behind the vehicle when backing up.

2014 Subaru Forester
2014 Subaru Forester
The Subaru Forester all-wheel drive compact crossover is completely redesigned for 2014. This fourth-generation 2014 Forester is slightly larger in all dimensions than the outgoing model (2009-2013). It wears somewhat bolder skin wrapped around a roomier cabin and boasts both improved performance and higher fuel economy.

A 170-horsepower 2.5-liter horizontally opposed flat four-cylinder (aka boxer or H4) is standard on the 2014 Forester, while a new 250-hp turbocharged version of the BRZ sports car's 2.0-liter H4 powers 2014 Forester 2.0XT models. It uses a combination of direct fuel injection, high compression (10.6:1), Subaru's Dual Active Valve Control System (D-AVCS) and intercooled turbocharging to deliver a much more spirited 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque between 2000 and 4800 rpm.

All 2014 Forester models come with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Subaru is a leader in all-wheel-drive technology and this sets Forester apart from front-wheel-drive competitors that offer all-wheel drive as an option. A 6-speed manual gearbox supersedes the previous 5-speed manual as standard, while Subaru's Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) replaces the old 4-speed automatic.

The CVT mated to the 2.5-liter engine has a selectable low shift mode that adds engine braking on downhill grades. The high-torque version of this transmission comes with the turbo engine and has steering wheel paddles for manual shifting. Both use adaptive control to continually optimize gear ratios based on driving preferences and conditions.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder together with the CVT, likely the best-selling combination, boasts the segment's best all-wheel drive fuel economy at an EPA-estimated 24/32 mpg City/Highway, or 27 Combined. That highway rating is a five-mpg improvement over the most fuel-efficient 2013 Forester.

Compared to the previous-generation model, this new 2014 Forester feels more agile thanks to a 50-percent stiffer structure, retuned front strut and double-wishbone rear suspensions and larger, 17-inch tires and wheels. The upgraded rear suspension uses pillow ball joint mounts for its lateral links to smooth the ride. We found the four-wheel independent suspension delivers fairly agile handling with good ride. The new Electric Power Assisted Steering gives surprisingly good feel and feedback while contributing to improved fuel efficiency.

The much quicker, more athletic and more fun to drive 2014 Forester 2.0XT turbo models boast a sport-tuned suspension on 18-inch wheels and larger brakes with ventilated rotors front and rear.

Technology abounds on the 2014 Forester: A new rearview camera along with a new color multi-function display are available. Subaru's available new EyeSight driver assist system uses a stereo camera (instead of radar) to integrate Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning.

A Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) feature on 2.0XT models has a steering-wheel switch that lets you choose from among three driving modes: Intelligent (relaxed throttle response for normal driving), Sport (quicker throttle response and a 6-speed-manual mode for the CVT), or Sport Sharp. The latter delivers even quicker response with eight manually selectable ratios.

All Foresters come with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. CVT models use a more sophisticated electronically managed type than do those with the 6-speed manual. Both systems continuously power all four wheels, transfer torque to those with the best grip and integrate with the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system to improve all-weather traction and stability.

A new X-Mode feature on upgrade models optimizes control of the engine, transmission, Active AWD, brakes, VDC and other systems to further improve control on slippery surfaces and steep inclines, while Hill Descent Control uses the VDC system to maintain constant speed and improve control on downhill grades.

We are impressed with the 2014 Forester's improved dry-surface dynamics (ride, handling, steering, braking) and its noticeably roomier, quieter, more comfortable cabin. The Forester 2.0XT's tighter suspension and more aggressive tires elevate this five-passenger compact CUV almost to the level of sport-sedan fun.

Acceleration performance with the standard engine is slow (capable of 0-60 mph in a long 9.3 seconds), but the 2.0XT's powerful turbo engine improves that measure to a quick 6.2 seconds. Earlier Subaru boxer engines were rough, but they have become far smoother and more refined in recent years.

The 2014 Subaru Forester boasts several advantages over its most popular competitors among the compact crossover utility vehicles. Most important are Forester's standard all-wheel drive at a lower price than Toyota's RAV4, Honda's CR-V, and Mazda's CX-5 with optional all-wheel drive. Forester also boasts a roomier cabin front and rear and surprisingly better EPA fuel economy with the available CVT vs. the competition when equipped with automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive.

Model Lineup 2014 Subaru Forester

2014 Subaru Forester models offer a choice of engines. Forester 2.5i models come with a 170-hp 2.5-liter engine and a choice of CVT or 6-speed manual. Forester 2.0XT models feature a 250-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with CVT.

Forester 2.5i ($21,995) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming with steering wheel control switches and a tilt/telescopic steering column, Incline Start Assist, outside temperature display, security system with engine immobilizer, carpeted floor mats, multi-function display with outside temperature and fuel economy readouts, 17-inch steel wheels. A 6-speed manual is standard, Forester 2.5i CVT ($22,995) includes the continuously variable transmission.

Forester 2.5i Premium ($23,495) gets upgraded audio, 10-way power driver's seat, rearview camera, upgraded multi-function display, reclining rear seatbacks, dark tint privacy rear glass, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Premium with the 6-speed manual comes with an All-Weather Package, which includes heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. Forester 2.5i Premium CVT ($24,995) also comes with a panoramic power moonroof, but the All-Weather Package ($500) is an option. Navigation is optional ($1,100).

Forester 2.0XT Premium ($27,995) includes the turbocharged engine and CVT and cloth upholstery with sport bolsters.

Forester 2.5i Limited ($27,995) gets the CVT and All-Weather Package as standard, plus perforated leather-trimmed seats, a power rear liftgate, fog lamps, upgraded instrument cluster with LCD, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, automatic climate control and new X-Mode, which adjusts the suspension for slick conditions, with Hill Descent Control. Navigation is optional ($1,100).

Forester 2.5i Touring ($29,995) and Forester 2.0XT Touring ($32,995) include the leather trim and other Limited features and the CVT and add touch-screen navigation, 440-watt, eight-speaker harman/kardon premium audio with Aha smartphone integration, an electroluminescent instrument cluster with LCD display and a one-touch folding rear seatback. The Driver Assist Technology package ($2,400) includes EyeSight, Keyless Access/Start and HID headlights.

Safety features standard on all models include intelligent dual-stage front airbags, front seat side and side curtain airbags with added head protection for front and rear occupants. A rollover sensor activates seat belt pretensioners and deploys the curtain bags if it senses a potential rollover. New for 2014 are anti-whiplash front seats, a driver's knee airbag, Brake Override and an impact-sensing fuel cutoff. The Brake Override cuts engine power if both brake and accelerator are applied beyond a certain threshold. All-wheel drive is standard. A rearview camera is optional and can help the driver spot a small child behind the vehicle when backing up.

2014 Ford Transit
2014 Ford Transit
Ford has big global plans for its next-generation vans, both the compact Transit Connect that it has been selling in the U.S. for several years and the all-new Transit model, which is larger.

Ford's European line-up includes an array of vans in commercial and passenger configurations. In keeping with its OneFord strategy, the company decided it was time to consolidate its various global van offerings. So the bigger Transit will late next year replace the long-in-the-tooth E-Series van offered in the U.S. that is branded Econoline.

The Ford Transit will have some big tire tracks to fill considering the long-running popularity of the Ford Econoline, the segment's best-seller. One reason the Econoline has dominated the competition is that the big van can be reconfigured in any number of ways. The good news is that Ford won't switch to a one-size-fits-all arrangement when Transit jumps the Atlantic. You'll still be able to customize it extensively.

The version Americans will get will be the same as the all-new European Ford Transit the maker recently previewed at a special introduction in Amsterdam. It might take U.S. buyers a while to get used to the more European shape of the van which is decidedly different from that of the classic American E-Series.

The Ford Transit features a more sloping, aerodynamic face that sweeps into a tall roofline providing plenty of room inside, and easy access to that cargo. Ford plans to offer a variety of body styles including short- and long-wheelbase, as well as tall and standard roof heights. For now, only a rear-wheel-drive powertrain layout will be offered in the U.S. though it's possible the maker could eventually add the front-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations now available in Europe.

The new Transit van, which will be assembled in Kansas City, will be offered with two different powertrain options, starting with Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and an unspecified diesel option.

Ford promises the new van will deliver at least 25-percent better fuel economy than the outgoing E-Series. Of course, it helps that the new model will be significantly more aerodynamic and an estimated 300 pounds lighter than comparable Econoline configurations.

Ford says the new Transit will introduce a variety of safety features not found on the antediluvian Econoline, though such details, as well as whether the new van gets fuel-saving stop/start technology, won't be revealed until the official unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

2014 Chevrolet Impala
2014 Chevrolet Impala
Forget what you know about the Chevrolet Impala. Originally launched as a 1958 model, the Impala name boasts a long, storied history. Though of late it was often dismissed as a mediocre rental car, the Impala is back with a vengeance, sporting a sophisticated design, high-quality interior and spot-on driving dynamics.

Chevrolet is now calling the five-passenger Impala a full-size sedan, though it was previously classified as a midsize. Surprisingly stylish looks grab you from the first glance, and a high-quality interior with many thoughtful touches keep driver and passengers happy in the cabin.

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala is bigger, quieter and more efficient than before. Its wheelbase has been stretched by a little more than an inch, yet it offers nearly six more inches in combined front and rear legroom. The 2014 Impala is front-wheel drive and shares GM's Epsilon platform with the Buick LaCrosse, Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Malibu.

Three engine choices range from powerful to practical. General Motors' familiar direct injection 3.6-liter V6 is the beefiest of the bunch, with 305 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. A 2.5-liter Ecotec inline-4 makes 196 hp and 145 lb.-ft., while a 2.4-liter inline-4 with GM's eAssist mild hybrid system is good for 182 hp and 172 lb.-ft. All variants use GM's 6-speed Hydra-Matic transmission. The V6 will roll off the assembly line first, followed 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, with the eAssist version expected a few months after that.

EPA fuel economy ratings for the V6 are 19/29 mpg City/Highway. EPA fuel economy estimates for the four-cylinders were unofficial at press time, but Chevrolet expected the 2.5-liter to achieve 21/31 mpg city/highway, and the 2.4-liter with eAssist to yield 25/35 mpg. By way of comparison, the old Impala got an EPA-estimated 18/29 mpg with its standard 3.5-liter V6 and 17/27 mpg with the bigger, 3.9-liter V6.

Better aerodynamics help the 2014 Impala with fuel economy, in part aided by new wind blockers positioned in front of the tires, which look like mud flaps put on the wrong way. Four-cylinder models get active aero shutter grille and underbody aero panels to make the 2014 Impala even more slippery. Efficiency is aided by new electric power steering that draws energy only when the steering wheel is turned.

A quiet ride is one of the 2014 Impala's strong suits. Acoustic glass in the front side windows, extra foam in the body, and additional sound deadening material in the floor pan and trunk help to keep occupants feeling like they're in their own little bubble.

Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and brake assist come standard on all models, and rotors have a special coating that resist rust, which not only keep them shiny, but also reduce shudder under braking and, according to Chevrolet, doubles the life expectancy of the rotor to 80,000 miles.

Several electronic safety systems are optional on mid-range Impala LT models and standard on Impala LTZ trims, including forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert and rear park assist. Top-of-the-line Impala LTZ trims with the V6 engine can also be equipped with full-range adaptive cruise control with collision mitigation braking and brake pre-fill. With this technology, the Impala will automatically keep a safe distance from the car in front while cruising, and will slow down or even stop itself if a collision is imminent.

Chevrolet hopes the Impala will end up in more driveways, not just in rental car lots. Nearly 75 percent of last-generation Impalas were attributed to fleet (mostly rental car) sales.

Although competitors to the outgoing iteration of the Impala were midsize sedans such as the Toyota Camry, the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala competes with full-size flagship sedans including the Toyota Avalon, Ford Taurus, Hyundai Azera.

Model Lineup

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala comes with a choice of three engines: A 2.5-liter inline-4, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.4-liter inline-4 with eAssist.

Impala LS ($27,535) comes with the 2.5-liter engine, cloth upholstery, air conditioning, 8-way power driver seat, 4.2-inch color infotainment display, a six-speaker audio system with CD player and satellite radio capability and 18-inch steel wheels. An optional LS Package ($570) adds foldable rear headrests, a cargo net and rear park assist. (All prices are Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices and do not include destination charge and may change at any time without notice.)

Impala LT is available with the 2.5-liter inline-4 ($29,785) or the 3.6-liter V6 ($30,760) and includes cloth upholstery with vinyl trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system with 8-inch color touch display and lockable storage behind the screen and 18-inch painted alloy wheels. Options for the LT trim are plentiful, including a Convenience Package ($940) with remote start, auto-dimming mirror, universal home remote, premium carpeted mats and a rearview camera. The Advanced Safety Package ($890) adds forward collision, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and side blind zone alert. The Premium Seating Package ($945) includes heated faux suede front seats, power passenger seat and cargo net. A Premium Audio Package ($1140) upgrades to an 11-speaker Bose surround sound system with additional ambient interior lighting, a120-volt power outlet, rear spoiler and 19-inch alloy wheels. Navigation ($1,095) also includes keyless access and ambient lighting. A power sunroof ($1,050) can also be added to LT models already equipped with one of the aforementioned packages.

Impala LTZ with the 2.5-liter inline-4 ($34,555) or the V6 ($36,580) includes perforated leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power driver's and passenger's seats, push-button start, rearview camera, rear park assist, HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights, exposed dual exhaust pipes with bright tips and 19-inch alloy wheels. Impala LTZ comes standard with the safety features found in the LT advanced safety package. Options on the LTZ include a Comfort and Convenience Package ($1,035), which adds ventilated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, memory power steering column, seats and mirrors; auto-dimming rearview and driver's side mirrors. Navigation ($795) must be paired with the Comfort and Convenience Package. The Bose Premium Audio system ($700) is also available. LTZ models with the V6 engine can also be equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels ($400) and full-range adaptive cruise control ($1,695) with Collision Mitigation Braking.

Impala with eAssist is similarly equipped.

Safety features on all 2014 Chevrolet Impala models include 10 air bags, stability control, traction control and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and brake force distribution. A rearview camera is optional and can help the driver spot a small child when backing up. Collision Mitigation Braking, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and side blind zone alert are optional.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
An all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray goes on sale this fall. The 2014 Stingray Coupe will start at $51,000, while the 2014 Stingray Convertible will retail for $56,000, according to Chevrolet. (All prices are Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices and do not include $995 destination charge.)

The 2014 Stingray Coupe was revealed at the January 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The upcoming Corvette shares only two parts with its predecessor. The change is so significant that it earns the designation of Stingray, a name GM execs say is reserved for the most revered Corvette models.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray will be the fastest 'Vette in history, with 455 horsepower and an estimated 0-60 mph time of less than 4 seconds, courtesy of an all-new 6.2-liter LT1 V8. Fuel-saving technology adds a sensible side to the Stingray, including direct injection, continuously variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. A 7-speed manual with rev matching allows drivers to get the most out of their shifts without having to heel-toe.

Five drive modes from Eco to Track change the balance between economy and performance by tweaking twelve elements, including steering, suspension and throttle mapping. Like all of GM's performance cars, the Stingray was tested extensively on the track during the development. The result is a 50/50 weight balance and improvements in handling, including steering that's five times stiffer than the outgoing model. An optional Z51 Performance Package includes an electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oiling system, integral brake, differential and transmission cooling, as well as a unique aero package.

The radical design is clearly aimed at a global market, with taut, sleek lines that have been likened to those found on Ferraris and McLarens. It's longer, lower and wider than the outgoing model, with a fierce, hunkered-down stance. Designers say they used both the stingray (of the aquatic variety) and fighter jets as inspiration.

The Stingray hasn't completely abandoned its American heritage, however, as a few design cues still evoke pure muscle; most notably the squarish, Camaro-esque taillights, and a bold, center quad exhaust, with fluted shapes and shining metal that would put a symphonic horn section to shame. Not everyone gushes over the new design; criticism heard on the show floor following its debut ranged from "too European" to "overdone." But nobody can say the new Corvette doesn't demand attention.

Entry-level Corvettes in the past have been notoriously skimpy on luxury, but a few upscale touches on the new Stingray help to quash that reputation. All models get a hood and removable roof panel made of pricey carbon fiber, which reduces weight and allows for a lower center of gravity. On the inside, the interior has been significantly improved with better finish and materials including aluminum trim (carbon fiber is optional), and standard dual, high-resolution information screens that are reconfigurable. Seats are built using an underlying structure of lightweight magnesium and come in two variants: A more comfort-oriented GT option and a Competition Sport setup with more supportive side bolstering.

The Stingray Coupe revealed at Detroit was a Corvette 3LT with the Z51 performance package and other options that will be priced at $73,360, according to GM. Among its options: 3LT interior package with leather-wrapped interior ($8,005); Z51 Performance Package ($2,800); competition sports seats ($2,495); exposed-carbon-fiber roof panel ($1,995); Magnetic Ride Control with Performance Traction Management ($1,795); dual-mode exhaust system ($1,195); carbon fiber interior trim ($995); sueded, microfiber-wrapped upper interior trim ($995); red-painted brake calipers ($595); black-painted wheels ($495). The 3LT interior package includes Bose 10-speaker surround-sound audio system; SiriusXM Satellite radio with one-year subscription and HD radio receiver; color head-up display; memory package; navigation system; heated and ventilated seats with power lumbar and bolster adjustment; premium Napa leather seating surfaces; and leather-wrapped dash and instrument panel, console and door panels. The Z51 package includes 19-inch front and 20-inch rear tires; a transmission-cooling system and magnetic damping.

The Stingray is expected to hit dealerships in Fall 2013. All 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray models will be built in GM's plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

2013 Fiat 500e
2013 Fiat 500e
Add Fiat to the list of automakers jumping on the electric vehicle bandwagon. The electrified retro subcompact was revealed at the November 2012 Los Angeles International Auto Show, but Fiat is rolling out the 500e begrudgingly. The car was not designed to satiate clamoring consumer demands, but, rather, to satisfy strict California emissions requirements for automakers. Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne says each car will be a $10,000 loss for his company.

Still, it's a compelling little car for city dwellers seeking a chic alternative to uglier EVs like the Smart Electric Drive and Chevrolet Spark. New front and rear bumpers set the 500e apart from its gasoline-powered twin, as do revised side mirrors, a retuned suspension, unique 15-inch wheels with low-rolling resistance tires and a more aerodynamic rear spoiler. Additional aero enhancements help to reduce drag and increase range.

Under the hood, the little four-cylinder is replaced with an electric motor good for 111 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. Not surprisingly, the 500e's bundle of lithium-ion batteries adds a lot of weight (a whopping 600 pounds, to be exact). But despite its heftiness, the 500e is expected to go from 0-60 mph in about 9 seconds. That's lethargic acceleration performance, but it's about 3 seconds faster than the gas-powered version.

Fiat claims the 500e will go somewhere between 80-100 miles on a single charge. Charging time is expected to be about four hours with a 240-volt charger, or a painful 22 hours using a regular household 110-volt outlet.

In the cabin, a new 7-inch TFT touchscreen with navigation displays EV functions such as range and charge data. Interior colors are available in Nero or Steam, both with bright orange accent trim.

The Fiat 500e will roll into California dealerships sometime in the second quarter of 2013. Pricing hasn't been announced, but we guess it will hover around the $35,000 mark, before any federal or state tax incentives. Fiat execs say they're still deciding if or when it will be available in other states.
