2013 Maserati Quattroporte
2013 Maserati Quattroporte
If you’re in the market for a four-door, grand-touring coupe, there is no shortage of choices from the likes of Mercedes-Benz (the CLS-Class), Audi (the A7) and Porsche (the Panamera). Appealing though they may be, none of these cars can offer the buyer an Italian heritage, and none of them can claim to have an engine derived from supercar builder Ferrari.

Enter the Maserati Quattroporte (Italian for ‘four doors”), the Italian luxury automaker’s concession towards practicality in a grand-touring automobile. Like the other makes and models referenced above, the Quattroporte enjoys sleek, coupe-like styling, with the added benefit of rear doors for passenger access. It goes its own direction in styling, however, boasting an elegant shape that’s immediately recognizable as a Maserati. Think long and low, and you get the idea of what the car’s designers had in mind. Forget conventional coupe wisdom, since you won’t find a narrow daylight opening or rising beltline here.

Inside, the theme of Italian elegance carries over. There’s luxury in abundance, from the genuine wood veneers to the rich leather upholstery with available contrasting leather piping. You get the sense that Maserati’s designers worked hard to ensure that nothing was overlooked, down to the power-assisted opening and closing of the doors. Like a fine Italian suit, most Quattroporte models are built to order, and not sold off-the-rack (or in this case, the dealer lot). In other words, most any interior detailing you’d like to specify is probably available for order.

On the road, the Quattroporte is an entertaining car that quickly makes you forget about its size. Some would consider the ride to be on the harsh side, especially on models equipped with the Sport Suspension, but we’d call it just about right. If you’re looking for the optimal blend between handling and ride comfort, consider checking the option box next to the Skyhook air suspension, which is adaptable enough to suit most buyers. There are plenty of other options on the market for buyers wanting a softer ride, and we appreciate the fact that the Quattroporte communicates its intentions to the driver like a sport sedan.

Power in base models comes from a 4.7-liter V-8, rated at 434 horsepower. Step up to the Sport GT S, and output is bumped to 444 horsepower, which is good enough to deliver a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 178 miles per hour. The sole transmission choice is a quick-shifting ZF-built six-speed automatic, which gives the driver the option of shifting via paddles if desired. From inside the cabin, the Ferrari engine note is unmistakable, and the engine sings like a chorus of angels all the way to its 7,500 rpm redline. Ensuring that the Quattroporte slows as well as it goes is the job of its Brembo brakes, and they’re more than up to the task.

An all new 2013 SRT Viper coupe goes on sale this fall
An all new 2013 SRT Viper coupe goes on sale this fall
When the last model for the previous generation Dodge Viper rolled off the assembly line, many of us took comfort in knowing that the next generation had already been confirmed for production. The new generation SRT Viper was rumored and teased for a good amount of time, building up the suspense for the new design and powerful engine. Now, it’s finally here, bringing its new look and ditching the Dodge title in the process.

The new SRT Viper has received an all-new, timeless exterior design with a new carbon-fiber hood, roof, decklid, and aluminum door panels. As a first, the Viper will be offered with LED taillamps that integrate stop-and-turn illumination in one element.

Under the hood, the new Viper features a new 8.4-liter all-aluminum, V-10 overhead-valve engine that will deliver a total of 640 HP and 600 lb-ft of torque. The new engine will be mated to an improved Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission.

For the new generation, the Viper will be offered in two different versions: standard and GTS. The GTS will offer more technologically advanced solutions, like two-mode active suspension for those clients who want to enjoy it on the race track.

2013 Subaru BRZ
2013 Subaru BRZ
With two models dueling for enthusiast dollars, the jointly-developed Subaru/Toyota sport coupe known as the Subaru BRZ or Scion FR-S here in America is rapidly becoming a hot commodity--for very good reason.

While cosmetically different, and available with different levels of equipment at slightly different prices, the BRZ is essentially a doppelganger to the FR-S. The one performance difference is a slightly lower rear spring rate in the BRZ, which makes it a bit more compliant and a touch more biased toward understeer at the limit. Otherwise, the two cars are functionally identical.

That's a very, very good thing. That sharing means the 2013 Subaru BRZ is an incredible buy for the driving enthusiast, priced just above $25,000, but handling as well as or better than most cars available at twice the price. Nimble, comfortable, surprisingly roomy given its compact exterior, and fantastically light weight, the 2013 BRZ is about as perfect a package as we could ask for.

New 2013 Mercedes Benz G Class
New 2013 Mercedes Benz G Class
When it comes to luxury off-road vehicles, few can match the Mercedes-Benz G Class for capabilities, swagger or price tag. Said to be developed for the Shah of Iran’s military in the 1970s, the G Class is equally at home dune-bashing outside of Riyadh or dicing for a parking space on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Its retro-funky, box-on-box styling is absolutely ageless (which is one reason why Mercedes-Benz hasn’t done much of a restyle on the latest version), and the G Class will get you noticed, whether you're a pro baller or a well-heeled soccer mom. Despite its “hey, look at me” appearance, the G Class will absolutely deliver you from point A to point B in (relative) comfort, regardless of roads (or the lack thereof) and weather conditions.

That kind of comfort and capability comes at a price, and the least expensive G Class model, the G550, starts at over $107,000. That buys you the expected interior amenities, like butter-soft leather, genuine wood trim, premium carpeting and plenty of sound-deadening insulation to mask the G’s origin. Only the Land Rover Range Rover, or perhaps the Lexus LX 570, come close to matching the G Class in both amenities and off-road capability, but neither can match the Mercedes-Benz for prestige.

At the start of the range lies the G550, powered by a 5.5-liter V-8 rated at 388 horsepower and mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The combination is good enough to deliver a 0-60 mph time of six seconds flat, but don’t expect even reasonable fuel economy. Last year, the G550 was rated at 12 mpg city and 15 mpg highway, and we expect about the same from the 2013 version.

If more thrust is a requirement for you, stepping up to the G63 AMG will get you a twin-turbo version of the same V-8 engine, rated at 544 horsepower. That’s good enough to shave almost a second from the 0-60 time, with the G63 AMG taking just 5.3 seconds for the same run. Both versions power all four wheels through three locking differentials and high and low ranges ensuring that the G Class will get you where you need to go.

2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel offers monster torque, 28 MPG HWY
2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel offers monster torque, 28 MPG HWY
Porsche is getting in on the diesel craze with its first diesel-powered vehicle ever offered in the U.S. The 2013 Cayenne will be available with a turbo-diesel V6 option pumping out 240 horsepower, permanent all-wheel drive and a staggering 406 lb-ft of trailer-towing torque. That's enough power to propel the super-SUV to 60 in 7.2 seconds and 135 miles per hour on the track. That'll outrun your neighbor's base Cayenne by .2 seconds, but don't try to take on a Cayenne Turbo (0-60 in 4.4 seconds).

Porsche says the diesel's estimated fuel economy numbers are 20 city / 28 highway. The Volkswagen Touareg offers the same diesel engine but with 15 fewer horses and EPA estimates of 19/28 mpg. Bad news, however, for anyone who likes shifting their own gears. Looks like only the 8-speed Tiptronic will be available with the diesel.

While the least-expensive Cayenne will set you back at least $48,850, adding the diesel engine runs the base price up to $55,750. That's not too bad when you consider the platform-sharing Touareg TDI starts at just below $47k and runs all the way up to $59k for the Executive level VW.

Ford releases more details of EcoBoost Explorer Sport
Ford releases more details of EcoBoost Explorer Sport
Ford Motor Co. has released official details of the seven-passenger 2013 Ford Explorer Sport; it’s the top trim line of the model. We first learned of the sporty version in March during the New York auto show.

The full-size SUV will use the company’s EcoBoost turbocharged V6 for power, making 365 hp in this application. The Explorer Sport is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. A six-speed automatic is standard.

The Sport gets special Terrain Management System settings. The system adjusts manually or automatically to differing road conditions such as snow, sand and rocks. Ford says the changes “enable a luxurious ride for enthusiasts, without the harshness of performance competitors.” A torque-sensing four-wheel-drive system is standard.

The Sport is available in four colors: ruby red metallic, white platinum metallic, tuxedo black and ingot silver.

Unique steering-wheel stitching, door panel appliqués, Sport-logo floor mats and illuminated scuff plates set it apart from regular Explorers.

2013 Range Rover debuts new look, lighter weight
Boasting a new look but a familiar profile, the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover’s redesigned body hides a structure that checks in nearly 700 lbs. lighter than its predecessor.

That weight reduction, Land Rover says, should yield noticeable increases in both fuel economy and on-road driving dynamics. Yet the Range Rover is also said to retain its legendary off road ability, a character trait that made it the world’s first luxury SUV.

The 2013 Range Rover is only the automaker’s fourth model during its more than 40 year history. Initially conceived as a slightly more refined version of the rugged Land Rover, a post-World War II farm implement, the Range Rover slowly became more luxurious through the 1980s before reaching its current status today as one of the world’s most recognizable vehicles

New 2014 BMW M3 to feature 3.2L I6 engine
New 2014 BMW M3 to feature 3.2L I6 engine
Last month, BMW confirmed that the new 2014 BMW M3 and M4 models will be powered by a 3.2 liter inline-six engine. The F80 M3 will debut, in concept form, at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, and it might have a surprise under the hood.

The powerplant found under the hood is a newly developed 3.2 liter unit, still inline-six, which has its fundamentals in the current M3 engine, the S65 V8.

The engine is rated at 450 hp and with a new performance package it could reach 480 horsepower and a top speed of 185+ mph.
