2015 Lexus RC F
2015 Lexus RC F
The sporty Lexus RC coupe was introduced at the 2013 Tokyo Show, and the upcoming RC F is its torrid sequel. Since 2008 an F suffix for any Lexus vehicle designation indicates high performance (think F for Faster), and the RC F would seem worthy of the label.

Faster is a certainty. The RC coupe will be offered with a choice of a hybrid powertrain (176-horsepower four-cylinder augmented by a 105-kilowatt electric motor, total system output of 217 hp); or a 314-hp horsepower V6.

Presented at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the rear-wheel-drive Lexus RC F will be propelled by a 5.0-liter V8 rated for at least 450 horsepower, according to Lexus, and 383 pound-feet of torque.

The V8 will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with a manual operating mode via steering wheel paddle shifters. Lexus calls it Sport Direct Shift, or SPDS, and it will send power to the rear wheels via a torque vectoring differential, sending power to the loaded rear wheel in cornering. The new differential is a first for Lexus.

The engine, billed by Lexus as its most powerful current V8, is unusual in that it is capable of operating in two cycles: Otto cycle, which is common to most gasoline internal combustion engines, and Atkinson cycle, which essentially reduces power and, of course, fuel consumption. Otto cycle mode is there when the driver demands everything the engine has to give, Atkinson for more relaxed driving conditions.

Although the objective for this interesting bit of technology is obviously optimizing fuel economy, Lexus was not ready to make any mpg forecasts for the new engine. On the other hand, Lexus was ready to forecast top speed potential: 168 mph.

Acceleration potential remains to be seen. Based on a modified GS sedan platform, the RC F will weigh less than 4000 pounds, according to Lexus, but power-to-weight specifics weren't available at the Detroit show.

Other RC F mechanical distinctions include enhanced chassis rigidity, firmer suspension tuning, 19-inch forged aluminum alloy wheels, Brembo brakes with big rotors, and an active rear wing that deploys at 50 mph. Both the wing and torque vectoring differential contribute to increased cornering capability, and drivers can choose between three operating modes: standard, slalom, and track.

The dynamic difference between slalom and track settings probably has to be experienced to be understood.

Another indication of the RC F's sporty character can be seen in the instrumentation, which includes a monitor gauge for the torque vectoring differential, a stopwatch, and a g-force meter to track tire adhesion during hard cornering.

The interior is also distinguished by a set of bucket seats with oversize thigh and torso bolsters, as well as extra high seatbacks.

Like the standard RC, the RC F features a huge version of the trademark Lexus spindle grille, an interpretation that definitely qualifies as bold, whatever else one may think of it. Unlike the standard RC, though, the F has functional side vents that contribute to cooling, and underbody panels to improve airflow management.

For owners who want their cars to look even racier, Lexus will offer a carbon fiber package, which includes a roof panel and rear wing, with a clear coat finish.

The RC F is expected to be in Lexus showrooms by this fall. Pricing will be announced closer to the on sale date.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The newest generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class compact sedan made its debut on the eve of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, with updated styling, retooled engineering and a bevvy of new technology.

Now that Mercedes-Benz has its entry-level CLA-Class, introduced last year, the 2015 C-Class steps it up, touting itself as a miniature S-Class of sorts with new engines, a more luxurious cabin and optional electronic driver aids borrowed from the flagship.

Following the trend of ever-swelling new car models, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is bigger than its predecessor. It's 3.7 inches longer and 1.6 inches wider, riding on a wheelbase that's been stretched by 3 inches. Cargo volume is up to a formidable 17 cubic feet, compared with 11.7 cubes on the last C-Class. It's also lighter, as Mercedes-Benz engineers managed to shave off 220 pounds, achieved in part by a new structural design that uses an extensive amount of aluminum, replacing heavier steel.

With a more upright front grille, the 2015 C-Class bears a closer family resemblance to other recent Mercedes-Benz models, from the entry-level CLA-Class to the SLS AMG supercar. Like before (perhaps in attempt to keep up with BMW, which offers a variety of design styles for its 3 Series sedan), the 2015 C-Class will be available with a choice of two front fascia: A sport version with MB's three-point start integrated into the front grille, or a more classic radiator grille with the start on the hood. LED headlights are optional.

Notably, the C-Class drops its rear-wheel-drive variants for now, as Mercedes-Benz has only announced two models for the U.S., both available only with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injected inline-4 with preliminary power estimates of 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The C400 4MATIC comes fitted with a 3.0-liter turbocharged direct-injected V6 that makes 329 hp and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. Both cars use Mercedes-Benz's 7-speed automatic transmission, which has been updated.

Suspension has been retooled via an independent four-link front axle design. A sport suspension with a slightly lowered ride will be an option, and Mercedes Benz's adaptable air suspension, which uses continuously variable damping and gives drivers a choice of four driving modes, will be offered for the first time on a C-Class model.

Inside the cabin, a new center stack features a floating-style 7-inch display screen, with an even bigger, 8.4-inch screen on cars equipped with the optional Multimedia Package. It sits atop three round air vents with Mercedes-Benz's latest signature bull's-eye design. Controls are laid out cleanly and simply in two horizontal rows. On the center console, a touchpad next to the knob that controls the COMAND interface allows drivers to swipe, tap and draw to enter information into the system.

New safety features include Distronic Plus, borrowed from S-Class and E-Class models, which enables the car to automatically use the throttle and brake to follow the traffic in front at speeds less than 37 mph, and a cross-traffic detection and intervention system that can automatically stop the car if a pedestrian or other vehicle crosses its path. Other optional safety features include automatic parking assist, a 360-degree camera and active lane keeping, which will steer the car back into the lane if a driver veers.

Pricing hasn't been announced, but we anticipate the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class will start somewhere close to the outgoing C300, at around $40,000. Cars are expected to arrive in dealerships in Fall 2014.

2015 Volkswagen Golf R
2015 Volkswagen Golf R
A new Volkswagen Golf R goes on sale early next year featuring a more powerful engine, better fuel economy and improved driving dynamics. Volkswagen's fastest-ever production Golf wagon was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Visually, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R is set apart from the standard Golf and GTI by its unique bodywork. Front and rear bumpers, xenon headlights and redesigned LED daytime running lights, as well as the 18-inch wheel design, are all exclusive to the Golf R. In back, the Golf R gets its own rear diffuser and quad chrome tailpipes.

Powering the new Golf R is an updated version of VW's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that bumps up horsepower over the previous version to 290 hp. Torque is up to 280 pound-feet, available as low as 1800 rpm. Equipped with VW's 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Golf R can streak from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds, according to Volkswagen. Acceleration with the standard 6-speed manual is less impressive, with a 0-62 mph time of 5.3 seconds, according to the company. As before, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R is all-wheel drive.

With its sport suspension, the Golf R rides 0.8 inches lower than the base Golf, and just a smidge lower than the GTI. The front strut setup uses a new control arm, and the rear multi-link suspension has been revised. An optional adaptable suspension allows drivers to choose from three driving modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport. In addition, the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R has a Race Mode, which adjusts damping, engine response and shift points (with the dual-clutch transmission) for track driving.

Steering has been tweaked, with a new progressive variable ratio steering system, which Volkswagen says will make the new Golf R more responsive. Steering effort is lighter in low-speed maneuvering (such as parking lots), and heavier through twisty corners. Brakes are bigger and better, with vented discs all the way around.

Inside, standard sport seats and the three-spoke steering wheel are wrapped in Nappa leather. A new optional audio and navigation system uses a 5.8-inch screen with proximity sensors that can automatically change to the menu screen when someone's hand is nearby.

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf R is slated to arrive in U.S. dealerships in the first quarter of 2015. No official word yet on pricing, but we'd guess the new Golf R will start slightly higher than the outgoing model, at about $36,000.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06
2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06
Fresh from winning the 2014 North American Car of the Year award, Chevrolet plans to add even more pace to its star-spangled sports car with a new edition of the Corvette Z06.

Fourth in a series dating to 1963, the Z06 is a higher-performance version of the Corvette, aimed at delivering maximum performance in autocross events and track day workouts.

It has always been a hard-edged Corvette variant, and in its next iteration, due to reach showrooms late this year as a 2015 model, it will be the most capable Corvette ever, according to GM.

The development team had a head start with the 2015 Corvette Z06 program, because the aluminum foundations that contributed to the standard Stingray's North American Car of the Year honors required almost no revisions for the Z06, according to GM.

Stiffer by some 60 percent than the previous Corvette, those underpinnings are also being used in the CR7 Stingray race car that debuted at February's 24 Hours of Daytona sports car enduro.

Like previous entries in the Z06 series, the 2015 Corvette Z06 will feature fatter tires (from Michelin), stiffer suspension, and bigger brakes (from Brembo), with the option of a carbon-ceramic brake package.

But the key elements that separate this Z06 from its predecessors, according to GM, are a hefty horsepower boost and exceptional aerodynamics. The Z06 spent extensive time in the wind tunnel and emerged with more downforce than any car GM ever built or tested, the company said. A revised front air dam, wider fender flares, and big NASCAR-style rear spoiler are the most visible elements of the aero enhancements, but the mesh grille makes an interesting footnote. The carefully tuned mesh actually funnels air more efficiently than an opening with no grille at all, and also aids in brake cooling.

Will the new Z06 be the fastest Corvette ever? That remains to be seen. The new Z06 will be propelled by a 6.2-liter supercharged V8, the LT4, which Chevy characterizes as all-new, though like other Corvette engines its lineage dates to the immortal small block of 1955. With supercharging, a Z06 first, GM engineers said they expect to see at least 625 horsepower and 635 pound-feet of torque.

That's very close to the output of the supercharged LS9 V8 (638 horsepower, 604 pound-feet) employed in the rocket tech ZR1, the first Corvette capable of exceeding 200 mph. And it's a big jump from the standard Stingray's 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet.

However, aerodynamic downforce, which gives a car more grip in cornering, especially at high speeds, comes at the expense of aerodynamic drag. Top-speed testing has not yet been conducted, so no one is certain what it will be. GM said it is still working on the basic aero package and may tweak the design further. In fact, there will be three different aero add-ons available.

One other new element will be the availability of a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Developed by GM, it will be equipped with paddle shifters and Chevrolet promises shift response times equal to German dual clutch automatics. The standard transmission will continue to be the seven-speed rev-matching manual.

While the Z06 looks like a formidable package, the most capable Corvette ever, the folks at Chevrolet marketing know that there's no such thing as enough. Thus there will be a Z07 option package, which includes even more aggressive rubber, even more downforce, and the carbon ceramic brake package.

Z06 production startup is slated for November 2014, and a few of the new cars may rumble into showrooms before the end of 2014. However, the Z06 won't be widely on sale until early 2015, as a 2015 model.

GM had no comment regarding pricing when it was unveiled at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The current Z06 started at about $76,500. We expect the new one to cost substantially more. And yet it should still be a bargain among cars in this performance class.

2015 Audi Q3
2015 Audi Q3
Hard on the heels of its all-new 2015 A3 small sedan, Audi this fall will launch its first luxury compact crossover to take on the likes of BMW's X3, Infiniti's QX50, Lexus's RX, Mercedes's GLK and Lincoln's soon-to-come MKC. Filling out the range of Audi CUVs that has so far included just the size-larger Q5 and larger-still Q7, the A3-based Audi Q3 took its U.S. bow at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

While a more fuel-efficient four-cylinder turbodiesel will likely come later, the 2015 Q3's standard and only powertrain will be a 200-hp turbocharged, direct-injected 2.0-liter four driving its front wheels through a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Audi quattro permanent all-wheel drive and an Audi drive select system offering a choice of three response and handling modes (Comfort, Dynamic and Auto) will be available.

The Audi Q3's carefully crafted cabin seats four adults in quiet comfort, plus a fifth when needed. Cargo capacity is 16.2 cubic feet with the split rear seatbacks upright and 48.2 cu. ft. with them folded down. Dramatic LED interior lighting illuminates the doors, foot wells, vanity mirrors, storage compartments, the air vent thumb wheels and even the cup holders. Front airbags, thorax-pelvis side bags (in the backs of the front seats) and side curtain head airbags are standard. Rear side airbags are optional.

Audi promises a sport-oriented balance of agile handling and smooth ride. The front suspension is McPherson struts with forged aluminum lower wishbones, the rear a four-link axle with a separate spring/shock units that maximize cargo space. Electromechanical power steering with speed-dependent power assist, electronic stability control (ESC) with off-road mode and hill descent assist, and 18-inch alloy wheel are standard, 19-inchers optional.

Standard equipment will include leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof with power retractable sunshade, 12-way power heated front seats, Audi's advanced key system, xenon-plus headlamps and LED DRLs, taillights and mirror-mounted turn signals. Among the available optional features will be a Sport Package with adjustable-thigh-support front sport seats; a Driver Assistance Package with a rearview camera, Audi Parking System and Audi Side Assist (which uses radar to assist in safe lane-changing); Audi MMI Navigation Plus with a 7.0-inch color screen; a power tailgate with remote actuation and a programmable preset opening angle; a 465-watt, 10-channel, 14-speaker BOSE Surround Sound system; and a Prestige Trim Package of convenience and infotainment features, including Audi Connect.

2015 Kia Soul EV
2015 Kia Soul EV
Pure electric cars still account for a tiny percentage of U.S. auto sales, but increasingly tough EPA fuel economy standards are pushing more and more carmakers to offer EVs, and Kia is the latest. The Korean company announced an electrified version of its endearingly offbeat Soul crossover at February's Chicago Auto Show, Kia's first pure electric offering in the U.S. market.

The Kia Soul EV is slated to go on sale in selected markets in the third quarter of 2014 as a 2015 model, and its basic specs are typical of most contemporary electric cars. Kia cites an operating range of 80 to 100 miles between charges, and recharging time for a fully depleted battery is about 24 hours on standard 120-volt household current.

That time can be cut to as little as five hours for owners who buy an optional 240-volt charger, according to Kia.

Kia plans to offer owners a choice of three charger suppliers: Bosch, Leviton, and AeroVironment.

The Soul EV has three charging ports, to accommodate a variety of charging systems, two for conventional AC service, one for the 480-volt CHAdeMo public charging system developed and promoted by a Japanese consortium. The acronym stands for Charge de Move, and the system operates on direct current (DC), restoring a depleted battery to maximum in 30 minutes or less.

Another possible source of battery replenishment entails a 50-kilowatt public system, which can achieve an 80 percent recharge in about 33 minutes, according to Kia.

Like other EVs, coasting and regenerative braking play an important role in stretching battery life. The Soul will have two operating pre-sets, Eco On, and Eco Off, with Drive and Brake modes for each. Brake mode in the Eco On setting can produce as much as 12 percent recovery of the car's kinetic energy, according to Kia, recovery that translates as battery replenishment.

Still another feature to combat range anxiety, Kia will offer an app that will pinpoint recharging stations. Also, Kia dealers who sell electric Souls will offer free recharging to their customers.

The electric Soul will be propelled is by a liquid-cooled AC synchronous permanent magnet electric motor rated for 109 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. Like most electrics, the motor sends power to the front wheels via a single-speed constant ratio transmission.

A 96-cell, 27-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion polymer battery feeds the motor. It resides under the floor, and reduces rear seat legroom from 39.1 to 36.0 inches. The standard 120-volt charger, which stows under the cargo floor, takes a bigger bite out of luggage capacity, down 5.1 cubic feet to 19.1.

Kia enhanced the Soul's structure to accommodate the battery's weight, claiming a 5.9 percent increase in torsional rigidity, as well as a slight center of gravity reduction.

Just how much the battery adds to the Soul's curb weight, was not revealed, but Kia's 0-to-60 mph forecast of fewer than 12 seconds, some three to four seconds slower than gasoline versions, suggests that weight is substantial.

Initial rollout for the new electric will be limited to showrooms in California, Oregon, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland.

2014 Ram ProMaster
2014 Ram ProMaster
The Ram ProMaster marks Chrysler's first full-size van since the Dodge B-van that carted so many people to airports and religious retreats. Although ProMaster is new to the American market there are millions of them on the roads of Europe wearing Fiat Ducato badges.

ProMaster is offered in conventional cargo van layout, a cargo van with windows (which can be made into a passenger van at a facility adjacent the factory), a chassis cab more like a flat-bed, and a cutaway van suitable for adding your own box van and likely to be popular with Class C motorhome builders. From three weight classes, four body styles, three wheelbases and two roof heights offer 14 configurations.

A 280-hp 3.6-liter gasoline V6 and 6-speed automatic derived from those in Ram's cargo van and Chrysler vans is standard on all. The alternative for every ProMaster is a 174-hp 3-liter four-cylinder diesel coupled to a 6-speed automated manual transmission.

Ram ProMaster is a front-wheel-drive van. In addition to any traction benefit in inclement weather and less hardware running front to back, that means a low load floor and big doors that will clear a standard pallet; a sliding driver's-side door and various window options for working out of it are available.

Top load and tow ratings clear 5000 pounds, though not coincidentally. Interior cargo volume ranges from 283 cubic feet to 530 cubic feet. Up to 17 cargo securement points are included.

The driving position is upright with an excellent view forward and good mirrors. Two seats are standard, a double passenger seat offered, and the passenger version is expected to carry 12 individuals. Controls are simple, the floor is unobstructed and navigation and Bluetooth are offered.

Maximum space efficiency means a box shape, so consider ProMaster's slab sides a blank canvas to improve its looks with your graphics. The big front bumper/grille assembly is three parts to lower replacement/repair costs of fender benders, and the mirrors and paint are the only things you can easily scrape off it.

ProMaster competes against Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford's outgoing E-van and upcoming Transit, Nissan NV, Chevrolet Express, and GMC Savana.

2015 Ford Mustang
2015 Ford Mustang
After much anticipation, Ford unveiled the latest rendition of its iconic pony car at a special event just in time for the car's 50th anniversary. Images leaked a few days ahead of the reveal, prompting critics to question whether the new design was revolutionary enough.

For certain, the lines and proportions of the 2015 Ford Mustang are still unmistakable. Long in front and short in the rear, the new Mustang is lower and wider, with a wider rear track and rear fenders, giving it a more hunkered-down appearance. In a nod to Mustangs past, coupes return to the fastback-style rear window. As before, a convertible variant will also be available, with a new soft top that Ford says will lower and raise twice as fast as that found on the outgoing model. New design cues include LED headlamps and accent lighting, as well as a new three-dimensional interpretation of the classic tri-bar tail lamps.

Three engines will now power the all-new 2015 Mustang. The standard 3.7-liter V6 is good for 300 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. A new 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-4 Ecoboost engine is the most efficient, which Ford estimates will make at least 305 hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. The star of the lineup is the 5.0, the newest edition of the Mustang's line-topping V8 model, which Ford has revamped with new valvetrain and cylinder heads, as well as a new intake manifold for better low-speed aspiration and improved fuel economy. The 5.0 is no slouch, putting out 420 hp and 390 lb.-ft. of torque.

Unlike many car companies, Ford still has love for the manual transmission. The standard gearbox on all models is a 6-speed manual with hill start assist. A 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters is optional.

Handling should improve on the 2015 Mustang thanks to an all-new suspension setup on front and rear. Up front is an independent MacPherson strut system that uses double ball joints, which Ford says allows space for larger brakes. In back, the Mustang finally goes independent, too, an integral-link setup that features retooled springs, dampers and bushings, as well as aluminum rear knuckles that reduce weight.

Four-wheel disc brakes come standard on every Mustang, with a choice of three brake packages. Standard wheels on V6 and Ecoboost models are 17-inch aluminum; the 5.0 gets 18-inch aluminum wheels. A Performance Package with summer tires is available on the Ecoboost and 5.0.

Pushbutton start and Ford's Sync voice recognition system. Drivers can also change colors of the gauge display.

The 2015 Ford Mustang should be available in the fall of 2014. Coupes will come first, followed by the convertibles. Pricing hasn't been announced, but we expect the new Mustang to cost slightly more than the outgoing model. A bare-bones 2014 Mustang starts around $20k, so we're guessing the 2015 Mustang will begin around the $25,000 mark.

2015 Nissan Versa Note SR
2015 Nissan Versa Note SR
Like a clever chef who keeps creating new versions of the same basic dish, Nissan has been adding variations to its Versa Note subcompact five-door hatchback, and the 2015 Nissan Versa Note SR is the latest.

One of Nissan's introductions at the Chicago Auto Show in early February 2014, the SR raises the number of Versa Note trim levels to five, a total that includes a new Versa Note SL that was also on the company's Chicago stand.

The SR suffix is reminiscent of some Nissan hot rods of years past (for example, the Nissan Sentra SE R), a subtle suggestion that there's a little more spice in the recipe for this particular version of the Versa Note.

That suggestion is reinforced by sporty cosmetics. But the spice is confined to eye candy; the subdural SR is the same as the Versa Note S MT, S Plus CVT, S CVT, and SL.

All models share the same econo-oriented 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine (109 horsepower, 107 pound-feet of torque), and most of them send power to the front wheels via the same Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). So equipped, Versa Notes are EPA-rated for 40 mpg Highway, a rating that applies to the SR.

All models share the same suspension components, MacPherson struts front, and a torsion beam rear axle, all tuned toward the comfort end of the ride/handling spectrum.

Thus the elements that distinguish the SR from its siblings are all visual.

Exterior trim highlights include a modified front fascia, headlights with smoked lenses, standard fog lights, body color rocker panel extensions, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a unique rear spoiler, and a set of dark 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels wearing 195/55R all season tires.

Interior distinctions include simulated suede-trimmed seats with orange accents and double stitching, a piano black center dash panel, dedicated instrumentation, a floating trip computer, silver accents, and chromed control knobs. There's also a sporty steering wheel, leather-wrapped and characterized as 370Z-inspired.

In addition to the SR trim elements, standard features include a four-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system and a 12-volt power outlet. An optional convenience package augments standard content with Nissan's versatile Divide-N-Hide storage system; NissanConnect infotainment system with and 5.0-inch color screen; NissanConnect Apps for smartphone integration with Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn radio); Bluetooth streaming audio; hand-free text messaging; a USB iPod interface; satellite radio; and a rearview camera.

The SR will be offered in eight exterior hues, each with interior color coordination.

Although the Versa Note SR will make its appearance in showrooms this spring as a 2015 model, only some six weeks after its Chicago debut, Nissan was not prepared to discuss prices. Pricing for the 2014 Versa Note line starts at $13,990.

2015 GMC Canyon
2015 GMC Canyon
Absent from the North American midsize pickup market since 2012, Chevrolet and GMC have made their much-anticipated return official, Chevy at last November's LA Auto Show, GMC with the unveiling of the 2015 Canyon at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Billed as the third element in a three-truck strategy (Heavy Duty, standard half-ton, and midsize) the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are portrayed as scaled down versions of their half-ton counterparts, though one glance makes it clear that midsize certainly doesn't mean small.

Like the GMC Sierra, the 2015 GMC Canyon will ride on a fully boxed frame, but the chassis will be unique to the mid-size truck. Although dimensional specifics haven't been announced, the 2015 GMC Canyon will be 5 inches narrower, 3 inches lower, and some 900 pounds lighter than the Sierra, with a frame that's about 40 percent lighter than that of the full-size truck.

When the 2015 Canyon goes on sale this fall, buyers will have two engine options: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, rated for 193 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-liter V6, 302 horsepower and 270 pound-feet.

Both engines already exist in the General Motors North American powertrain inventory. A 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder will join the lineup for 2016, a first in the midsize pickup category.

The 2.5-liter engine will be available with a 6-speed manual transmission (limited to the base rear-drive extended cab only) or a 6-speed automatic, the V6 will be automatic only. The AutoTrac four-wheel drive option, featuring rear-drive, automatic, 4WD High, and 4WD Low operating modes via an electronically controlled transfer case, is a slightly more sophisticated system than the Colorado's, and essentially the main mechanical difference between the two midsize pickups.

Other mechanical elements include the option of a mechanical limited slip rear differential, and a new electric power steering system.

Payloads will go as high as 1450 pounds, towing capabilities up to 6700 pounds, and GM boasts both will be best in class and will offer top fuel economy ratings.

Canyon will be offered in extended and crew cab body styles; no standard cab. Extended cab models will come with a 6-foot cargo bed, crew cabs with a 5-foot bed, the longest bed in this class for a four-door pickup according to GM.

Suspension elements consist of coil-over front springs and two-stage semi-elliptic leaf springs at the rear, with four-wheel disc brakes.

Like the Sierra, the 2015 GMC Canyon will offer an EZ-Lift tailgate and a standard Step Assist pad at each end of the rear bumper, making it easier to access the cargo bed. The bed rails and cargo floor include 13 tie-down points, and a standard two-tiered storage system will expand cargo bed versatility. There will also be a variety of cargo management accessories.

Although the Chevy and GMC are mechanically identical, the Canyon's styling is bolder, with a big GMC grille dominating the front end. There will be three trim levels: base, mid-grade SLE, and the top-of-the-line SLT, the latter available with an All Terrain package.

Inside, the Canyon's instruments and center stack echo the dashboard of the new Sierra, sharing many of the same features, including infotainment and connectivity systems. Although the interiors of Canyon and Colorado are similar, the Canyon's materials are slightly upscale.

Standard safety features include front and side curtain airbags; rear view camera; Stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation; trailer sway control; and hill descent control. Options include forward collision alert and lane departure warning, both firsts in the mid-size pickup segment according to GM.

With the on-sale date almost a year away, GM refrained from furnishing any pricing specifics, other than to say that its new trucks would have the best value proposition in their class.

However, it's likely that the Canyon will be priced against premium versions of the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier, the two trucks that currently dominate the diminished midsize pickup class. Toyota Tacoma, which dominates the class, ranges from about $18,000 up to about $30,000
