2015 Subaru WRX STI
2015 Subaru WRX STI
An all-new version of Subaru's fastest sport compact debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Completely redesigned, the new WRX STI four-door sedan gets a longer platform, more interior room and new standard features.

Setting itself apart from the WRX, the 2015 Subaru WRX STI uses a stiffer chassis, firmer springs and quicker steering, the latter of which is still controlled hydraulically, unlike many contemporaries that are switching to electromechanical systems.

Design details include a large, functional hood scoop that's more deeply set to aid with outward visibility, revised foglight surrounds and, of course, the STI's giant rear wing. Inside, there's a new, thick, flat-bottomed steering wheel along with standard leather and Alcantara upholstery in a two-tone, red-and-black theme. A new 4.3-inch LCD comes standard.

Other upgrades include standard dual-zone climate control, heated seats, satellite radio capability, rearview camera and LED headlights. Harman/Kardon audio is optional.

A limited Launch Edition WRX STI comes with blue leather interior trim, pushbutton start, a short-shifter and gold-painted BBS wheels.

Disappointing to some, however, is that the 2015 Subaru WRX STI keeps the same engine as the outgoing model, a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat four-cylinder that makes 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. As before, the sole transmission choice is a 6-speed manual.

That's not to say this is the same old STI in new packaging. Along with revised steering and suspension, the 2015 Subaru WRX STI uses a new Active Torque Vectoring system on the front axle, which helps to improve balance and performance when accelerating through a corner. These updates promise to make what just might be the best-handling STI to date.

The 2015 Subaru WRX STI is available only in a four-door sedan model. Subaru says it has no immediate plans to give hatchback enthusiasts any love with a five-door variant. The sedan goes on sale in April 2014 with a base starting price of $34,495.

2015 Chevrolet Colorado
2015 Chevrolet Colorado
An all-new Chevrolet Colorado pickup goes on sale this fall. Bigger than the original Colorado compact, this one carries a midsize label.

The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado is a few inches lower, a half-foot narrower, a bit shorter, and about 900 pounds lighter than a comparable full-size pickup. A Crew Cab six-foot bed Silverado has just three inches more wheelbase and is just five inches longer overall than the longest comparable Colorado.

The 2015 Chevy Colorado comes on 128- and 140-inch wheelbases in extended cab (four doors) with six-foot bed and Crew Cab models with five- or six-foot beds. WT, LT and Z71 trim levels are available with two- or four-wheel drive.

Although the door and window lines look like the Colorado sold elsewhere in the world, this one is more Silverado than international Colorado. Only the roof and some hardware bits are shared with the worldly version. Most of the body panels are steel, the hood aluminum like many others.

A traditional pickup underneath, the Colorado has a hydroformed boxed frame, independent front and solid-axle rear suspension, and all-disc brakes. The top tow rating of 6700 pounds is slightly superior to the competition and close to many base model full-size pickups. Most of the bed utility bits (bumper step, bedliner, etc.) are similar to the Silverado's.

Aluminum engines include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder targeted at 190-plus horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-liter V6 around 300 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come with a 6-speed automatic, though only the V6 offers a tow/haul mode. Aero aids to fuel economy include top-of-bed surface details and automatic grille shutters on all models.

For 2016, Chevy Colorado will offer a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel. U.S. ratings have not been provided by Chevrolet, but the higher-emission version sold elsewhere was bumped to about 200 hp and 370 lb-ft this year. Expect the highest price and fuel economy for that engine.

The Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab offers a fold-flat bench rear seat with storage underneath. The Extended Cab bench appears more like two forward-facing compact buckets; Extended Cab rear side doors are clamshell, swinging rearward.

Silverado influenced the dash design of the 2015 Colorado, with prominent vent-framed center screen and clearly segmented controls. A floor shift suggests there will be no bench front seat option, but plenty of infotainment and some moderate lux equipment will be offered.

The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado made its formal introduction at the 2013 LA Auto Show.

2015 Chrysler 200
2015 Chrysler 200
When a car's main sales success is with rental fleets it's clearly time for a change, and that's what's on the horizon for Chrysler's mid-size front-wheel-drive sedan. Unveiled at the January 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Chrysler 200 has been redesigned front to rear, top to bottom, inside and out and goes on sale this spring.

All new starts with a redesigned unibody. At 108.0 inches, the wheelbase is fractionally shorter than the current model, but all other dimensions have expanded: length, width, and particularly height (from 54.8 inches to 58.7, providing plentiful headroom front and rear). The 2015 Chrysler 200 thus will stack up as slightly bigger than the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the mid-size segment leaders, and will be one of the roomiest cars in this class.

The new foundations of the 2015 Chrysler 200 trace their origins to Alfa Romeo, the sporty subsidiary of parent company Fiat, and they're wrapped in slick new sheetmetal created by Chrysler design staff. The flowing lines and widened stance lend a hunkered down look that disguises the relatively tall profile, and suggests a sporty persona. The company calls the look the new face of Chrysler, meaning we'll see a variation of the theme in the next generation of the 300 sedan.

Bigger, with more standard equipment and more safety features (Chrysler claims more than 60 new standard and optional features), usually adds up to heavier, and that's true here. The basic curb weight is listed as 3473 pounds, about 70 pounds more than the current Chrysler 200.

But the 2015 Chrysler 200's pace should pick up, thanks to more power from both its engines, augmented by a new transmission. The standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder goes from 173 to 184 horsepower, while output of the optional 3.0-liter V6 climbs from 283 to 295 horsepower. Although neither engine is fed by direct fuel injection, the latest internal combustion efficiency enabler, Chrysler anticipates substantial improvements in economy. Official EPA ratings weren't finalized by Detroit show time, but Chrysler forecasts up to 35 mpg on the highway for the four-cylinder engine, a 5 mpg improvement.

The key element in the fuel efficiency story is the 200's new 9-speed automatic transmission. Shared with the new Jeep Cherokee, it's a first for the mid-size sedan segment, and is controlled by a rotary knob, similar to the system pioneered in the Ram pickup truck.

Another upgrade for the new car will be the availability of all-wheel drive, a first for the Chrysler 200 and not common among mid-size sedans. For example, neither Camry nor Accord offer an all-wheel drive option. On the other hand, the Chrysler 200's powertrain options will not include a diesel or a hybrid.

In addition to its good looks, Chrysler also claims improved rigidity for the new unibody, thanks to the extensive use of high strength steel in its structure, about 60 percent, according to Chrysler. Suspension tuning, MacPherson struts front, multilink rear, twin tube shock absorbers, will tend toward sporty, according to the engineering team, and the electric power rack-and-pinion steering will be quick at 2.7 turns lock to lock.

In addition to exceptional roominess, the new interior will feature upgraded materials with an emphasis on soft touch surfaces, eye-pleasing instrumentation, and of course an expanded array of infotainment and connectivity features, standard and optional. Chrysler also claims that a number of noise-reduction measures will put the new Chrysler 200 in the front rank of mid-size sedans in terms of operational tranquility.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 is expected to begin rolling into Chrysler showrooms spring 2014 as a 2015 model, with a base price of $21,700.

2015 Kia K900
2015 Kia K900
No longer a brand for kids and hamsters wearing baggy pants, Kia is betting on more grown-up buyers with its first full-size flagship sedan, the K900, which debuted earlier this winter at the LA Auto Show and goes on sale later this winter or early spring 2014.

Although its alphanumeric name sounds like a police cruiser with a German shepherd riding shotgun, the Kia K900 is a spacious, sophisticated rear-wheel-drive sedan with styling led by design chief Peter Schreyer (who once penned Audi's lineup).

The Kia K900 is long and wide, with proportions that make it look low-slung. If it wasn't for Kia's signature mesh front grille, one might mistake it for a European grand touring car. This Kia will compete with full-size offerings from other manufacturers including the Chevrolet Impala, Ford Taurus, Toyota Avalon and Hyundai Genesis (the latter of which shares a version of the same platform), but could also creep into the territories of luxury sedans like the Acura RLX and Lexus LS.

Under the hood is either Kia's 3.8-liter, direct-injected V6 good for 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque, or an all-new 5.0-liter direct-injected V8 that produces a formidable 420 horsepower and 376 lb.-ft. of torque. Both variants come standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Standard features include many found on luxury vehicles, like adaptive LED headlights on V8 models, leather upholstery, LED interior lighting, power-adjustable front seats, and heated seats in front and rear. Audio comes from a 900-watt Lexicon sound system with Bluetooth, HD radio and satellite radio capability.

Kia's UVO infotainment system is accessed via a standard, large 9.2-inch display screen. A new user interface uses a rotary knob to control functions, much like BMW's iDrive or Audi's MMI.

Safety features include front and rear parking sensors, and V8 models get blind sport detection and rear cross-traffic alert, also bundled in the Technology Package on V6 cars. The tech package also adds lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.

The 2015 Kia K900 is expected to hit dealerships in early 2014. Pricing for the 2015 Kia K900 hasn't been announced, but our guess is that it will start around the $50,000 mark. Kia has announced that scheduled maintenance is included for three years or 37,500 miles.

2015 BMW M4
2015 BMW M4
A new 2015 BMW M4 goes on sale this spring replacing the outgoing M3 coupe. M4 brings the coupe in line with BMW's new nomenclature that uses odd numbers to denote sedans, and even numbers for coupes. The all-new high performance coupe from BMW's track-ready M division made it its official debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit January 2014.

Sharing the same powertrain with the new M3 sedan, the 2015 BMW M4 uses a new version of BMW's much-loved turbocharged inline-6. The 3.0-liter powerplant cranks out 426 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque (on tap from as low as 1850 rpm), more than the V8 used on the outgoing M3 coupe.

Engineers shaved off a little weight, also; the M4 weighs 176 pounds less than the old M3 coupe, thanks in part to a body that uses a greater percentage of aluminum and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. The M4 also gets a carbon fiber roof.

With increased power and reduced weight, the BMW M4 can dash from 0-60 mph in an estimated 4.1 seconds, according to BMW. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch. All M4s will be rear-wheel drive.

Unlike the M3's more upright stance, the BMW M4 is slightly leaned-back, with a signature BMW twin kidney grille that is ever-so-slightly lower and wider. Large front air intakes are functional and give the M4 an aggressive look. Vertical vents alongside the front fenders channel air down the sides of the car. A rear integrated lip spoiler keeps the car planted, while a smooth underbody and rear diffuser help the M4 to slice through the air with as little resistance as possible.

A lightweight suspension uses a double-joint spring strut setup in front and a five-link axle in the rear. Most components, including control arms, are aluminum. An optional adaptive suspension allows drivers to choose between different driving modes.

Steering effort can also be adjusted independently of the suspension; drivers can choose between Comfort, Sport and Sport + modes.

Inside the cabin, the design is similar to that of the BMW 4 Series coupe, but splashier with a variety of colors and finishes. Sport seats retain their signature contrast stitching, and carbon fiber panels are left exposed for a race-ready appearance. The M logo can be found everywhere, reminding drivers that they paid a premium for a much faster car than those regular BMWs.

Also available is a BMW M lap timer app, which lets drivers analyze their driving style via a paired smartphone. The app will record vehicle speed, lateral acceleration engine revs, steering angle and more, and can also record two laps on the same track, allowing a corner-by-corner comparison. Other options include a head-up display, navigation, adaptive LED headlights and collision warning system.

The 2015 BMW M4 is expected to go on sale in the U.S. in May 2014. Pricing won't be announced until closer to the on-sale date, but, as with the 4 Series coupes, we expect a price premium over the sedan. Our best guess? Around $65,000.

2015 Hyundai Genesis
2015 Hyundai Genesis
Having established itself as a player in the mid-size luxury game, Hyundai is set to raise the ante with a redesigned edition of its Genesis sedan. Due to go on sale this spring, the 2015 Hyundai Genesis, the second generation of the near-luxury sedan was revealed at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

While general dimensions are close to those of the current model, it appears that no part of went untouched. Length, width, and height (196.5, 74.4, and 58.3 inches, respectively) have changed only fractionally (width not at all), but the wheelbase has been stretched from 115.6 to 118.5 inches, and extensive use of high strength steel (50 percent, up from less than 20 percent) stiffens the unibody structure by 16 percent torsionally and 40 percent in bending, according to Hyundai.

Hyundai also cites enhanced stiffening of mounting points, front seat frames, and suspension elements. The suspension of the 2015 Genesis consists of multilink systems front and rear, with increased travel and slightly firmer tuning, according to Hyundai, with the option of a new auto damping system on 5.0-liter V8 models. All of this, plus extensive dynamic development consulting with Lotus Engineering, should add up to responsive handling, a performance area that's drawn lukewarm to negative comments in reviews of the current car.

Also new on the 2015 Hyundai Genesis: a full-time all-wheel drive option, available with the 5.0-liter V8.

Engine choices continue to be the same as the current Genesis: a 3.8-liter V6 and an optional 5.0-liter V8, both fed by direct fuel injection. However, both engines have received internal upgrades to enhance efficiency. Preliminary peak horsepower ratings (311 hp for the V6, 420 hp for the V8) may be down a smidge, although these numbers aren't final, but Hyundai anticipates increased torque, 293 and 383 pound-feet, respectively.

As before, both engines will be mated with a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission (at least, it was smooth on the outgoing model and we can't imagine it being less smooth in the new one).

So even though the new Genesis will weigh a bit more than the original, about 60 pounds, on average, straight ahead performance should be at least equal to, if not better than, that of the original. Of course, the all-wheel-drive version will be heavier.

The sheetmetal surrounding the redesigned chassis elements is, of course, all new and quite handsome. Hyundai's design team calls the look Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, a refinement of the eye-catching styling that helped to move the mid-size Sonata and compact Elantra up the sales chart, and the Elantra to North America Car of the Year honors in 2012.

For the Genesis, 2.0 comes across as a more conservative look, with the windshield set back, a fast rear roofline sloping to a short decklid, and one strong character line running from front to rear just below the greenhouse. But conservative and bold needn't be mutually exclusive, as the new car demonstrates with its big grille and massive front end design.

The design of the original Genesis was criticized for being too derivative, a watered-down version of contemporary Mercedes styling. The new Genesis is reminiscent of current Audi and Chrysler sedans, but the interpretation is distinctive, elegant, and visually arresting.

That elegant exterior surrounds a richly appointed and roomy interior, with more volume (123 cubic feet) than competing sedans from BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, according to Hyundai.

Look for an upgraded menu of safety features, including a new emergency braking system that will stop the car when the driver fails to react to an impending collision, as well as expanded infotainment and connectivity capabilities.

And, Hyundai's ongoing edge in the new car market, look for a combination of content and pricing that adds up to a strong value story versus competitors in the segment. The 2013 Genesis retailed for $34,200 to $46,800 for R-Spec.

2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe
2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe
A two-door version of the Cadillac ATS comes two years after the debut of the award-winning four-door compact luxury sedan. Revealed at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe goes on sale this summer and is poised to compete with the new BMW 4 Series.

The two-door ATS Coupe rides on the same platform as the four-door sedan and shares the same 109.3-inch wheelbase. The coupe differentiates itself with its own front fascia, roof, doors, rear fenders and trunk lid. The Coupe also has a wider track and rides on unique 18-inch wheels.

Powering the 2015 Cadillac ATS coupe will be an updated version of the sedan's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, which makes 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Cadillac estimates a 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds, good for the class. Gearbox choices include a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

Or, buyers can opt for a line-topping 3.6-liter V6 that pumps out 321 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. The V6 comes only with the automatic transmission.

Both variants are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive.

Contributing to the ATS Coupe's handling and performance is a multi-link MacPherson front suspension and five-link independent rear suspension. Front brakes are made by Brembo, and, like BMW, the ATS offers near-50/50 weight distribution. An adjustable suspension with magnetic ride control is optional, as is a mechanical limited-slip rear differential.

Like the ATS sedan, the ATS Coupe has a beautifully executed cabin, with tasteful materials and finishes, which rival, if not exceed, those found in the BMW 4 Series. A Bose premium audio system is standard on all models.

An updated version of Cadillac's CUE infotainment system with its 8-inch touch screen comes standard on upper trim levels and is optional on the base. Updates include a new text-to-voice feature that will read SMS messages from users' smartphones, and 4G LTE connectivity that allows driver and passengers use the ATS Coupe as a WiFi hotspot for up to seven devices.

Safety options include those found on other Cadillac models, including forward collision alert, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, lane departure warning, park assist and rearview camera. Also available is Cadillac's new lane keeping assist, which will steer the car back into its lane if the driver veers.

Expected availability for the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe is Summer 2014. No official word yet on pricing, but we expect a premium over the ATS sedan, which starts at $33,065. Our best guess is around the $36,000 mark, which undercuts the BMW 4 Series, and gives drivers more for the money over BMW's forthcoming small 2 Series coupe.

2015 BMW M3
2015 BMW M3
The latest incarnation of the high-performance 2015 BMW M3 made its first appearance at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2014, a few weeks after photos and details emerged on the web, teasing anxious fans who haven't seen a new four-door M3 since the 2011 model year.

Notably, the 2015 BMW M3 drops its predecessor's V8 engine for a beefed-up version of BMW's much-loved turbocharged inline-6. This time around, the 3.0-liter powerplant cranks out 426 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque (on tap from as low as 1850 rpm). That's more power than the V8. With it, the BMW estimates the 2015 M3 will be able to dash from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch. And as before, all M3 sedans are rear-wheel drive. As part of BMW's new nomenclature, the M3 is a sedan only; the M-powered coupe is now known as the M4.

The M3 sheds quite a bit of weight, which is expected nowadays with every new generation for most vehicles, but a feat nonetheless for BMW, which had been criticized in past years for cars that seemed to keep getting heavier. The new design shaves off 176 pounds compared to the outgoing model, thanks in part to a body that uses a greater percentage of aluminum and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. The M3 also gets a carbon fiber roof.

The new front end is both aggressive and functional, with larger front air intakes that help improve aerodynamics. Vertical vents alongside the front fenders channel air down the sides of the car. A rear spoiler keeps the car planted, while a smooth underbody and rear diffuser help the M3 to slice through the air with as little resistance as possible.

A redesigned, lighter suspension uses a double-joint spring strut setup in front and a new five-link axle in the rear. Most components, including control arms, are aluminum. An optional adaptive suspension allows drivers to choose between different driving modes.

Electric power steering feel is also adjustable, independently from the suspension. Selectable steering is standard and features Comfort, Sport and Sport + modes.

Inside the cabin, the design is similar to that of a 3 Series sedan, but splashier with a variety of colors and finishes.

Sales of the 2015 BMW M3 are expected to start in the U.S. in May 2014. Pricing won't be announced until closer to the on-sale date, but we figure a similar starting price to the outgoing M3, around $61,000.

2014 Mazda 3
2014 Mazda 3
Redesigned for 2014, Mazda3 is Mazda's entry in the overflowing compact class, offered in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body styles. The Mazda 3 is the company's perennial bestseller, and the 2014 Mazda3 is the first to incorporate the full suite of Mazda's Skyactiv Technology, a strange marketing name for a holistic approach to design aimed at reducing mass and optimizing powertrain efficiency to maximize fuel economy.

While that fundamental objective dominated every element of the new Mazda3's development, the design and engineering team was also challenged to give the car contemporary good looks that would stand out from the herd, and also imbue it with a high fun-to-drive index, sustaining Mazda's zoom-zoom image ethos.

Based on substantial drive time with several models in more than one venue, we'd say Mazda has achieved most of its goals. But perhaps not all.

Basics: New from floor pan to roof, the 2014 Mazda3 is roomier than the previous generation. Overall length (180.3 inches for the formal sedan, 175.6 for the hatchback) has actually shrunk slightly, and height is down just over a half inch, to 57.3 inches. But at 70.7 inches, the new car is 1.6 inches wider and that, plus a 2.4-inch wheelbase stretch, adds up to increased interior volume, particularly in the rear seat. For contrast, the Mazda3 sedan is bigger in every dimension than the Honda Civic four-door.

Bigger is only part of the story. Mazda claims a 30 percent increase in torsional rigidity for the unibody, an impressive improvement since the previous generation was noteworthy in terms of its chassis stiffness (and consequent agile handling). Even more impressive, Mazda also claims reduced curb weights, 60 to 100 pounds, depending on body style and trim levels.

The styling that surrounds these roomy interiors echoes the new Mazda6, crisp and eye-catching, with distinctive character creases in the body side sheetmetal, and, mercifully, a new grille, replacing the ugly plastic smile that afflicted the previous generation. The hatchback is the more appealing of the two body styles, to our eye, but the designers have managed to make the sedan stand out, too, which isn't always true in the compact class.

Inside, the Mazda3's redesign is readily visible in new instrument clusters (they vary, becoming fancier in higher trim levels), a new dashboard with improved secondary controls in the center stack, and upgraded materials, even in the basic i SV model. Forward sightlines are better than average, the front seats are sporty and supportive, and of course there's an array of available infotainment features.

As with the 2013 version, the 2014 Mazda3 has two engine options, both four-cylinders, both naturally aspirated, both with direct fuel injection: a 2.0-liter (standard) and 2.5-liter. The 2.0-liter's output is essentially unchanged, although the torque peak occurs much earlier in the rpm range, whereas power from the 2.5-liter is increased in the 2014 Mazda3 by 17 horsepower and 17 pound-feet of torque.

The 2.0-liter engine is the line's fuel economy champ when paired with the optional 6-speed automatic in the sedan's basic Mazda 3i trim level: 30/41 mpg City/Highway, according to the EPA. The standard 6-speed manual gearbox loses only one mpg on the EPA's City cycle and substantially increases the fun-to-drive factor, so the manual is our preference. A Mazda 3s sedan with the 2.5-liter engine and automatic transmission is rated at 28/39 mpg. A 6-speed manual is not available with the 2.5-liter at launch, but will be offered later.

Like the previous generation, the new Mazda3 is exceptionally agile, and a pleasure to guide down a twisty two-lane highway. It's smooth, quiet, and refined in most operating situations.

There isn't much to criticize. Power is on the tepid side, especially with the 2.0-liter engine and automatic transmission, and the lack of a manual transmission option for the 2.5-liter engine, although temporary, is disappointing. There is no hybrid version, nor is one on the visible horizon. This also goes for a diesel variant. Similarly, the bad boy Mazdaspeed3, one of the hot rods of the compact car world, may not be renewed in the latest generation.

Nevertheless, the new Mazda3 raises the ante in its class on several fronts: fuel efficiency, dynamics, quality, and style.

2014 BMW 2 Series
2014 BMW 2 Series
An all-new BMW 2 Series replaces the defunct 1 Series coupe this spring. Revealed ahead of the January 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2 Series brings the new coupes in line with the rest of BMW's new nomenclature of odd numbers for sedans, even numbers for coupes.

The BMW 2 Series is roomier than the outgoing 1 Series, which isn't surprising to anyone who's been following the industry. Cars today are much like women's dresses: Today's size 0 is like yesterday's size 6. Compared with the 1 Series, the 2 is 2.8 inches longer, with a wheelbase that's stretched 1.3 inches.

The 2014 BMW 2 Series will come in two variants (though it may be expanded with additional driveline options for 2015):

The BMW 228i will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that makes 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. Base MSRP is expected to be $32,100 plus $925 destination charge.

The BMW M235i (yes, the name is a mouthful) will come with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 makes a hearty 320 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. The M235i rides on an adaptive M sport suspension and comes with big brakes and Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tires. An M Performance mechanical limited slip differential will be available as an option. M235i is expected to retail for $43,100 plus destination.

Unlike some entry-level luxury cars (we're looking at you, Audi and Mercedes-Benz), the 2 Series keeps BMW's nimble rear-wheel-drive platform and near 50-50 weight distribution, making this perhaps the most tossable small luxury coupe on the market yet. However, the BMW 2 Series also has a starting price of a few thousand dollars more. For now, competition is slim among entry-level luxury coupes, but Cadillac will be hot on BMW's heels with the forthcoming ATS Coupe.

Although the BMW 2 Series bears some resemblance to the previous 1 Series coupe, the coupe is fully redesigned. Up front, the signature twin kidney grille is surrounded by wraparound headlamps and a wide lower air intake that makes it look more assertive than cute.

From the side, the BMW 2 Series loses the 1 Series' saggy lower line created by its droopy rocker panels. Instead, the 2 Series gets a virtual sheet metal tummy tuck, with a sharp, straight rocker panel and an upward-curving character line that flows into the rear wheel arches. An upper line running from the front fender, through the door handles and into the rear decklid is straight and sharp.

The rear is clean and simple, with just the tiniest hint of shelfy-ness that seems to be fading out with the post-Bangle era. Wraparound tail lamps and hood cut lines are very straight and horizontal. We're also happy to see that the M235i places its dual exhaust pipes one on each side, giving it a more symmetrical look, a departure from the single-sided dual pipes used on other models.

Starting prices for the BMW 2 Series will be $33,025 for the 228i and $44,025 for the M235i, including a $925 destination and handling fee. Expect to see BMW 2 Series models in dealerships in the spring of 2014.
